Three minutes to the start of the new year, his phone buzzes with sweet-sixteens sent too early. He steps over the edge of the twentieth storey of a nondescript office building, and he starts awake on his bed just as the clock strikes midnight, bringing in the new year and Gakushuu Asano’s fifteenth birthday.

Well, that’s an entirely different story, isn’t it? He goes down to a knee again, already setting his hat on her head. “Who? Why?” He’s already spinning out exit strategies and flipping through the portfolio of gangs and criminals he’d read on the way over. The Xianzhou doesn’t have much in the way of organized crime but–
“They want me to work!” she wails. “And study! But I’m tired and I want snacks!”
