Mike pats the space beside him, motioning for her to sit on the bed, and reaches for her hands as soon as she’s close enough. He wraps his hands around hers, enveloping them, and tries to keep the hysterics from crawling up his throat. El stares back patiently, and she still has that solemn look she’s taken to using, but Mike can always see the softness in her—soft eyes, soft face, soft hands, soft everything. That’s how it is when it’s just the two of them. Mike greedily covets it, always has, because that’s who he is, but he also wishes desperately that she could afford to be soft to rest of the world, too.
“El,” Mike starts, and that’s all he can say before the knot closes in his throat. He closes his eyes, tries to tame the tears that want to come out, tries to take a deep breath, tries to swallow, and still, the only thing that comes out is her name. “El.”
