Edward complied without much fight, though his brow twitched with early irritation.
"I’m fine," his voice muffled through the plastic.
"Doesn't matter, Major." The medic's tone was professionally blunt. "No offence, but you're much more likely to develop complications than any other soldier here. Smoke exposure just compounds it."
Edward bristled immediately. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"Means you're a walking medical liability, Chief," Havoc called out cheerfully, cigarette dangling from his lips. "High maintenance."

There's a man running towards you and the golden-haired boy.
“Sorry about that,” he says easily. “That’s my son you’ve got there—”
The boy makes a sound. It's not a word, but it’s close to one—close enough to be no.
“—thank you for catching him. I was so worried.” He steps forward, arm outstretched, like he’s about to take the boy back by the collar.
You move first.
You take a full step back, shielding the kid behind your legs.
Or, you’re not a good person. You know that. But you’re not a monster either.
So when a kid comes running, terrified, bruised, and silent, you catch him. You shield him. You don’t know why. Instinct, maybe. Or guilt.
But either way, you don’t let go.

Edward doesn’t cry.
Not after blood, not after statues made of ash, not even after almost dying.
Mustang tells himself that’s what makes him reliable.
But in the middle of a thunderstorm, with a sobbing boy in Ed’s arms and a madwoman laughing in chains, …he doesn’t wonder if Edward was ever too young for this.
He wonders why he let himself forget.

Edward froze. Slipping his head out from Hohenheim's grasp, he stared into the sun, eyes adjusting to the figure on the balcony. It had Hohenheim's face. And as his father recoiled, asking if that man was the homunculus in the flask, all he could see was that Al's murderer bore the appearance of the only family he had left.
"What have you done?"
"You gave me blood. In return, I gave you knowledge and freedom; now I've given you a body that will live forever."
OR, Edward is born in 1488, and when Father attempts to immortalize Van Hohenheim, Edward is caught up in the circle. Newly immortal, the only family he has left is a man he's grown to resent and his brother's soul, trapped within his chest. Over the course of four hundred years, Edward fights to separate the souls in the stone, because there isn't a world where he won't give up everything for Alphonse.

He is sent by Mustang back to the place to inspect and fix it while some stupid criminal is on the loose. He's already sore from his last stunt and too tired of this shit, but surely nothing's gonna happen.

A very strange letter delivered by a very strange owl leads to Edward Elric interacting with a very strange society that seems to ignore the Law of Equivalent Exchange. He's already fed up with their wand waving nonsense, but somewhere in this "magical" society lies Nicholas Flamel- and with him, a Philosopher's Stone. Ed has his suspicions, though; Dumbledore has obviously brought the teenage alchemist here for a reason, but why?
Takes place before Brotherhood begins. Ed is 14.
