James doesn’t understand what’s happening.
After the incident by the Black Lake, his red-haired angel had finally managed to break free from that sullen, greasy snake. He ought to have been relieved—yet he can’t stop paying attention to one thing:
That Slytherin… has changed.
The boy who always hunched over, who kept himself tucked into shadows as if he didn’t quite belong—now walks with a straight back, his former unease replaced by a sharp, steady focus. He ignores every gaze on him, striding down the corridors with quick, decisive steps, the hem of his robes sweeping behind him in dark, wave-like ripples.
Once, James even caught Snape standing by a window, watching a group of younger students roughhousing in the hall with a cold, assessing stare—as if he might deduct points any second, as if he had the authority to do that.
James can’t make sense of it.

It’s all so flattering, isn’t it? To have someone as powerful as the Dark Lord interested in a scummy Half-Blood like him— Or at least that’s what he tells himself, even though the cracks are showing. He is a Half-Blood after all, he’s read up about the last great Muggle war. He knows the kind of man that has views like that, like the Dark Lord’s, and what those views mean— but it’s all so flattering, so full of promises, promises that if he’s on the right side it won’t be him—

Summary
Hagrid has a crush. Well, really it's more of an—infatuation. A passing interest. A—It doesn't bear thinking about really. Because nothing will come of it. At least, that's what he keeps telling himself until one night's offhanded offer to be there for a certain potions professor—as a listening ear, you see, nothing untoward—turns into him finding out far more about the man than he ever expected to. And helping where he can, because Hagrid has always been a champion of the outcasts and the unloved and the dangerous, in what little ways he can be, and he finds that Severus Snape is no exception. Especially when Harry's third year brings with it a new DADA Professor, and opens up old scars most of the faculty hadn't even been aware of.
