Summary
He is not wet. That is his first realization upon waking. His throat is raw and his muscles ache. When he sits, a headache washes over him and fatigue reigns. The room is dark, though a faint light shines through an open door opposite him. It’s merely cracked and the orange light flickers and dances, promising fire.
There are only two possibilities through that door: Hell or Jean Valjean; Javert isn’t certain there’s a difference.

Javert forces a laugh. “Did you not believe me when I told you I never intended to put you in chains again?”
“This is rather a different scenario than what I believe you had in mind,” Valjean says reasonably. Still, his hands are gentle.

Summary
For five decades, Inspector Javert has shunned the idea of a soulmate, determined to defy the fate decreed for him by parentage and provenance. For what manner of soulmate could possibly await one who stalks the boundaries of society, walking the knife edge above the abyss that threatens always to pull him down? He will not dive into the dregs of that criminal class for something as useless to him as seeing colours.
Unfortunately, fate's plans are far less obvious and far more inescapable than he could have foreseen: after being thrown in each other's path again and again, it was inevitable Valjean's hands should find his eventually.
Fingers brush against his on the night of a doomed revolution, and Javert's world is upended in more ways than one.

To feel an ache in his chest was hardly unfamiliar. In the months following his brawl with the Seine, Javert was no stranger to untraceable pains; his broken ribs and water-logged lungs had seen to it that his recovery was one long and agonizing. Though, it was not any more agonizing than the mental anguish, the spiritual torment of waking almost every day to Jean Valjean at his bedside.
Yet, when Javert felt a pain rise in his breast, he thought it most odd.

Months after Valjean pulls Javert from the Pont au Change, they both find themselves without purpose. Valjean becomes hopeless without Cosette to care for. Meanwhile, Javert's growing doubt about his place in the police force leaves him aimless. But Javert and Valjean's lives have always been irreversibly intertwined. As they learn what it means to change and be changed, they may find that their lives are meant to intertwine in a way neither of them ever expected.
In case anyone needed another post-Seine Valvert slow burn ;)

Would you like, do you want. As if Javert ever wanted anything in his life that wasn’t Justice or Order or a warmer coat. Even now it’s easier to frame things by what he doesn’t want; to be a bother, to take up space, to be shackled to this house.
Though that last is something of a half-truth, one that makes Javert’s teeth grind. It is not, necessarily, that he wants to be anywhere but here, in Valjean’s kitchen, while the man makes tea for him. It is not, particularly, as if Javert has grand plans to escape. It is not even that he thinks of himself, that much, as trapped. It is only— Valjean’s house is cool in this endless summer, and Javert has nowhere else to go.
