It's super cringe and Hanamaki will have none of it.

“When’s the last time someone else stitched you up?” Bucky asked. He was still speaking in that breathy, low tone, like he was afraid something might shatter if he raised his voice.
“I don’t know,” admitted Sam. “Years, probably.”
His answer seemed to physically wound Bucky. For a moment, Sam was worried he might cry. Instead, he just lifted his left hand; touched a single finger to the side of the wound. Sam shivered from the cold touch of the metal.
“Is there anything else I can do?” Bucky said, watching the way Sam’s ribcage rose and fell with each breath. The question, for some reason, made Sam want to slam his head against a wall. He’d heard it often, but in all the wrong places. Never when he needed it. And never like this.

Sam and Bucky have this thing between them, and it keeps getting stronger, and something is bound to break. If only either of them could bring themselves to acknowledge it.

Summary
This was meant to be one maybe 4k word short story, and now... Here we are.
Empire of Light is an exploration of In-ho's character and the way modern art and philosophy play a role in the visual language of the show and overarching themes. Through the final part of that, and the sequel, I explore what In-ho and Gi-hun represent to each other in more depth, and how that dynamic can change as they get to know each other as people.
Unexpected Answer is a more traditional narrative than Empire of Light, and is much less dense, but it is a direct continuation that needs the context of the former.
Completed before the release of S03, but I feel as if S03 retroactively makes it land harder.

so, in essence, to live is to be recognised.
it’s to have memories and experiences of you built in other people’s mind. it’s to be a person to someone else, anyone else. whether that be your parents, your dog, your neighbour. the fact that you exist in someone’s mind as something– anything– is enough to put you in the category of living.

“Ellie?,” he called again, willing his mind to calm down, “it’s me, c’mon.” A stretch of silence. “Open the door, please, Ellie.” He tried the door handle again, twisting slowly and pushing to see if it’d move — and it did, slightly, and Joel realized she must’ve been sitting against it. “C’mon, kiddo,” he said softly, almost paternally. “Let me in.”
She hiccupped then. “I don’t—,” her voice cut out as crying ensued and Joel felt his heart clench painfully at it. “I just wanted to—“
Joel pushed the door again and it gave in. He peered inside, trying to find Ellie, before looking down to see her cornered and crying behind the door with an arm outstretched, a stained gauze dressing around it and a first-aid kit on her lap. When she saw him, she started crying harder, heavy tears rolling down her cheeks as she outstretched a hand to him, hiccupping hard enough for her shoulders to shake.

A second chance, he asks, begs, really. Just give me the chance to save them.
The being behind him pauses and Arthur can't look away from the moment he's frozen in, staring at the dark mountainside, aching to see the sun rise just one more time.
One chance, the spirit seems to whisper, voice satin soft. Make the most of it.
