Shuri immediately knelt in front of Bucky, her voice tense and focused.
“Bucky… everything okay?” she asked slowly, carefully choosing her words.“Yes,” he answered without hesitation. “I feel fine. Just…” he began quietly, then sighed, clearly frustrated with his situation. “Uh...who the hell is Bucky?”
The silence that followed was louder than any alarm.
Sam felt something inside him break.

Due to remnants of Hydra, Bucky needs one final procedure meant to heal his mind. Unfortunately, something goes wrong, and he loses all of his memory.

Six months after the events of the Winter Soldier, Sam is still searching for Bucky. Bucky is hunting for revenge. They make a deal — simple: find Brock Rumlow, then Bucky agrees to one meeting with Steve.

Summary
For once, it’s not a dark specter from Bucky’s past that’s come back to haunt them. That, as far as he is concerned, is great. A nice change of pace. Something he can bring up next time Sam complains about all the skeletons that are hiding in Bucky’s mansion full of closets.
He’s the one with the gun to his head right now, though, so maybe Sam’s at least got a point with that whole “you can’t even get out of bed in the morning without running into something dangerous” bit that he does.
Or: Somehow, Bucky keeps ending up on the wrong side of the past. Even the pasts that don’t belong to him.

“I won’t laugh.” Bucky straightens out both his back and his expression and scoots closer, knee colliding with Sam’s own. He keeps it there; it feels hot and solid, even through the kevlar. “C’mon, I promise. Just tell me.”
Sam turns it over in his head for a long moment. Swallows hard. Rubs his palms across his thighs.
“Okay,” he says, looking away. “Do you believe in ghosts, man?”
Bucky laughs, the asshole.
Sam has been haunted all his life. This is the first time he's ever thought of telling anyone about it.
