Summary
Arthur finds out about Merlin's magic prior to the events of season 5 and post-season 4. He goes into sullen silence to punish Merlin for lying to him, leaving Merlin in the interim of "does he want me dead or does he just need time?"
It leaves Merlin spiraling and Arthur to deal with the heart of Camelot, his heart, to deal with it.

Just a one-shot that came to me in the middle of the night while trying to sleep. Set during the middle of Season One. Merlin is attacked by one of Uther's knights. There are many people watching, but none make a move to rescue him. Except for one unikely man: another knight.

Merlin feels a little like a coward running away. But he can't take the silence. He can't take the glances.
So he leaves. Visits druid camps and then finds himself a cabin in the woods.
But it turns out there is no distance in which he can actually escape Camelot.

Summary
On Arthur's birthday a large group of druids and other magic users are set to be executed. As they are being marched out they start to sing Hoist the Colors, hoping that Emrys will hear their cry and come to their aid. Merlin's magic feels the summons and is unable to resist their cries so he disguises himself as Dragoon to save them.
Inspired by the song Hoist the Colors from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

In the aftermath of Merlin renouncing magic in front of Arthur, Gwaine confronts the warlock and asks, very politely, to get his head out of his ass. Arthur and the knights bear witness to the scene, completely in the blue about Merlin's magic and the state of his heart.
