Ghost knew secrets, so he let MacTavish keep them. He didn’t need to know every little detail, didn’t need to know how he ended up with a decorative plate from Iceland or what was up with all the pillows in his house and on his sofa or if that was his cup, a lumpy thing made of clay in the back of the cupboard that had been painstakingly been painted years before and was chipping at the edges.
To Ghost’s chagrin, there was nothing in the field manual about wanting to know someone— nothing about wanting to live outside of the military, and nothing at all about being human with anyone else at all.

Another glance back into the station and onto the display screens confirmed it: their train, Crewe to Edinburgh, remained stubbornly delayed due to the small storm that had hit practically the moment they had landed at Credenhill; they’d been lucky to get from Hereford to Crewe as it was, but their next train was more than an hour away. The rain was still coming down, the entire station humid and miserable with it— all the adult-sized umbrellas had already been bought, leaving Ghost to look through the kids’ umbrellas. He seemed generally unsatisfied, and MacTavish shifted foot to foot, until—
