Summary
Will thinks he’s dreaming. Mike decides to think it’s because of Will’s fever, when the idea of his best friend being convinced it’s more likely that he’s imagining it than for Mike to touch him makes Mike’s stomach drop uncomfortably.
“Sleep, Will. I’m here, I’ll always be here.”
Mike takes advantage of the half-unconscious state his best friend is in and lets his heart spill just a little, just enough for a few drops of what he feels for the boy in his arms to drop and land on his tongue.
“Love you.”
Will mutters, right into Mike’s chest, right over his heart - making it stop beating for a few long moments, when Mike’s world drops on its axis.
or
Will is sick and confesses to Mike while out of his mind due to the fever. Mike has a breakdown about it.

Summary
“I’m sorry,” Will says again, just to make sure Mike knows, and it comes out more sensical this time, his voice croaking and worn out.
He can feel the brush of Mike’s chin on the crown of his head when Mike shakes his head. “Don’t be,” he replies, and he sounds certain. There’s a beat of silence, before he slowly questions, “Feel better?”
Will swallows, and gives a slow nod. Mike doesn’t let go.
Will wakes up from a nightmare, and Mike keeps him close.

Mike smiles, leaning close and kissing Will softly. “Do me a favor?” he whispers.
A skeptical look forms on Will’s face. It looks a bit out of place there—mismatched with the smile still tugging at his lips. “Alright,” he says, his voice soft. “What’s that?”
“Say goodbye to me now,” Mike says quietly, and he leans forward, kissing Will, soft and sweet, “and then leave before I wake up.”

Warmth rises to Mike’s face, and he sputters, looking at his best friend incredulously. “How did you—”
“Dustin told me what you were trying to do.” Max shrugs. “And before that, Lucas mentioned it too. And so did El. Nice going, setting her room on fire, by the way.”
Great. Apparently, every single one of his friends knows about Mike’s failed attempts to surprise Will this week. That’s just fantastic.

“Don’t,” Mike snaps again.
This time, it comes out as more of a desperate, breathless shout. His heart pounds inside his chest. His head feels like it’s spinning, repeating the same, terrified mantra over and over again as if somehow that'll make it true.
He can’t be gone. Will can’t be gone.
