He had been the last one to see Will alive. A painful realization he came to when his mother talked to him the night everyone realized Will went missing.
They had biked the same direction, had raced each other. Will had won. And Dustin- Dustin said some words he regrets.

Did Will think about that? In his final moments? Did he think about his friend getting annoying with him and saying empty threats? Was he scared?
Tears streamed down his face as he thought about it. He should’ve said something else. Should’ve made will bike back to his place instead.
The Byers place was too. Too dark of roads. And he always takes Mirkwood home and cuts through the woods. It was dangerous looking back.
But nothing had happened before! Ever since Will had been biking to the wheelers that’s how he had done it! It was the quickest way to get there!
