On February 20th, 1973, Codename: Winter Soldier was assigned the mission of killing Texas Senator Harry Baxtor. Though the assassination was carried out with the necessary efficiency, the operative did not appear for his scheduled extraction. Priority is given to this asset’s retrieval.
He knows this much:
His name is James, and he is twenty years old. In 1954, he was assigned the codename of Winter Soldier for Department X, a clandestine arm of the KGB. He has been their agent since they saved him, an American soldier, at the end of the war, and his former allegiance to the United States makes him one of their most valuable undercover operatives in the fog of the Cold War.
Yet, even though there were some twenty eight years between then and now, he automatically defaults to 1945 whenever he considers the year. And every time they release him from cryogenic stasis, he can’t help but recognize that the world steadily grows less and less familiar to navigate. In a mission to the United States during 1973, he decides to briefly put aside his obligation to Department X to pursue what little he can still recognize. -

Summary
Steve Rogers travels back in time to be with the love of his life, Peggy Carter. He thinks he is hanging up the shield and retiring, but the past is not yet finished with Steve Rogers. He must make allies, old and new in order to protect his future from the threats of the past.
This fic incorperates elements from the MCU and the comics to create the story of the Invaders, the Avengers before the Avengers. It is loosely based of of the Invader's Marvel Comics set during WW2. This is a post-war interpretation of the team, with some roster changes to better fit the MCU.

History books do like to romanticise the facts.
A little re-wording here and there, and suddenly the bad guys are lookin’ mighty bad while the good guys are smelling of nothin’ but roses. When it comes to the legend of Captain America? History tweaked the story. Made it a sacrifice for country and honour rather than one carried out with one small block of Brooklyn in mind. It made older men from boys, and reckless deeds into heroics.
SHIELD had a hell of a time when they found two teens, still clutching at each other, instead of the men they expected. -

Ngày mai cậu rời đi đúng không?” Nó nhướn mày và nở một nụ cười quyến rũ đến phiền phức nhưng lúc nào cũng khiến Toro chao đảo. Phải thừa nhận là Toro quên béng chuyện các thành viên Invaders sẽ chia tay vào ngày mai do có lệnh và nhiệm vụ khác nhau, Toro đồng hành cùng Jim và dĩ nhiên là Bucky sẽ đi với Steve. Namor không có mặt và không may là Bucky chẳng còn ai khác để làm phiền ngoài Toro.
“Thôi được.” Toro thở dài và đứng dậy theo, vuốt phẳng quân phục và quần. “Mình nghĩ là mình có thấy một hàng kẹo dưới phố. Đi xem thử không?”

lost letters surrendered by elaine raymond's and rebecca barnes's families to the smithsonian national museum of american history. it appears that they were exchanges from the invaders members bucky barnes, now known as the winter soldier, and toro raymond who was known as the flaming kid. raymond had the pen name of "sunny" back in the war, a rather feminine name, possibly for censorship. 25 more letters were received by mr. raymond from mr. barnes, while mr. barnes had received 27 — excluding the other 11 unopened letters sent to ms. rebecca barnes after her brother's supposed death.

Adjusting to the modern era was never easy. Toro never thought he’d live through (or in his case, revive) the time where things are becoming more digital and advanced. There's stuff he still doesn’t get — like emails, and how photos are stored in touch screen cellular phones. What does cellular even mean?
It’s always been confusing, wandering into the unknown. Except he wasn’t alone, and he couldn’t pick a better person to learn with.

“Ironically, you’re such a wet sock.” Bucky yawns and stretches, then faces Toro again. “Let’s go somewhere then. I’d die of boredom before I’d die of a bullet to the heart in this war. You’re leaving tomorrow, right?” He raises a brow with that irritatingly charming smile that always gets Toro. Admittedly, Toro has forgotten the rest of the Invaders are separating ways tomorrow due to orders and different missions, with Toro accompanying Jim and obviously Bucky with Steve. Namor is away and it’s unfortunate that Bucky has no one else to bother but Toro.
“Fine.” Toro sighs and stands up as well, straightening his uniform and pants. “I think I saw a candy store downtown. Wanna check it out?”
“Oh, hell yeah.”

Life’s been good to the Avengers & Co. recently. Maybe ‘peace in our time’ wasn’t so far off, after all. Just don’t tell Tony that. He’ll either gloat or twitch. Maybe both.
Mickey is slowly but surely getting back on her feet. Bucky’s cadets are shaping up to be an effective team. The Avengers have things pretty well under control, with a comfortably large roster and a dedicated training facility. Steve is finally starting to really feel like he has a place in this brave new world.
This is, naturally, when they’re all reminded rather emphatically that ‘SNAFU’ still contains the word ‘normal.’
Trapped in another timeline, another world, Bucky, Mickey, and Tripod are forced to fight for their survival. Their best chance is to stay under the radar until they find the device that can send them home - and a way to fix it. So, teaming up with the Invaders is an excellent idea, right?

What if no one in the world knew who you were?
Bucky Barnes is a damn fine soldier, and so is everyone on his SpecOps team. They’re one of the most elite teams assembled, off the books and on the down low. A ghost team like Seal Team 6, without the drama. Their mission? Eradicate insurgent groups of Nazi leftovers recuperating in the Middle East. It’s not exactly what Bucky thought he was signing up for, but it strokes his ego, so he’s fine with it. He’s even mostly fine with leaving his very new boyfriend at home to do whatever it is that Steve does.
While left at home, Steve has his own missions, off the books and on the down low. An experimental team that the rest of the government cannot know about. So when he and his team are given location and extraction orders, he’s a little surprised to be paired with a second team. Hopefully he can knock this out before Bucky gets sent back home. The only question he’s left with is how the hell he’s supposed to find a ghost.
And how the hell is Bucky supposed to remember who he is when he’s spent six months in the desert being nobody?

Finding your place in the world is hard enough as it is. Finding your place in a world that isn't so sure it wants you in it, now that's another challenge entirely.
