Some things never surprised Butcher. He had seen and done it all, shock having been beaten from his cancer-ridden brain, but even now with his blurred vision, his reluctantly beating heart leapt to his throat. Right there, on his bloody couch, a smear of red, white, and blue sat, boot tapping impatiently against the floor. Butcher assumed it was his imagination again and stalked into the kitchenette, his tired body unable to resist the familiar pull of his nicotine craving. If he was going to deal with hallucinations early in the day, then he might as well have something to take the edge off.
Except, this hallucination was following him with its eyes, a very bored, relaxed look on its striking face.

“Enough bloody yappin, already. Tell us where Edgar’s lapdog is so we can end this already.” He makes a chesty show of cracking his knuckles, like he’s itching to tear something apart. Homelander notes a flash of raging gold in his dark eyes.
Of course, the fucker is jonesing on V, he thinks with a roll of his eyes.
“Looking forward to seeing his old comrade again,” he says, “and his old comrade, alone. Which brings me to the real point of our little chat.” His index finger and thumb pinch together. “I’d like a teeny tiny proposition. I mean, since you like to change the rules whenever you see fit, why can’t I bend them to my own whims, hm?”
Butcher crosses his arm, brows rumpled with impatience.
“Black Noir is all yours, Soldier Boy, just like you wanted. On the condition—” Homelander’s lips quiver (in anxiousness? excitement? he can’t tell the difference) “—that you stand down from this little tit-for-tat deal Butcher roped you into.”
Tonight, Soldier Boy is coming for blood, and Homelander refuses to fight the father he never knew. Maybe one good compromise is all that’s needed to settle the score once and for all. -
