She looked at him with frightened eyes. "People came. Just after Bowman and me got married. They said he was dead. Gave Bo a big old American flag and everything."
"There's no record of that happening, Ava."
"I ain't surprised. But you--you should leave it alone, Raylan."
Raylan sipped at his coffee. "Tell me something I don't know."

Summary
“I’ll take a plate out to him,” Boyd offered and Helen smiled her worried smile because she knew their secrets just like Boyd knew Daddy’s. She fixed him a plate with enough food for them both, covered it with a paper napkin, and told him to grab the thermos by the lunchbox on the counter in the kitchen and fill it with water too.
Boyd did as Helen told him and set out through the sparse woods behind the Givens’ home with the thermos on a strap across his chest, the plate set up like a waiter on the flat of one hand and two forks and two napkins clutched in the other.
He didn’t call for Raylan. He knew just where he would go.

Boyd tells her, “Ava, I told Johnny already. I ain’t back. I’m not staying.”
“Well, Raylan doesn’t think so,” she replies jovially like they're playing some kind of game.
Boyd feels at the end of his patience. “Well, Raylan left me nearly twenty years ago alone at the bus station in Cumberland with a bag in my hand and a broken heart on top of a broken promise. So, I don’t care what he fuckin’ thinks.”
Boyd Crowder returns after twenty years to a town and an ex that are changed beyond belief, but not beyond recognition. He'll have to decide what to do with that.

“I’m not doing this because I feel guilty, Raylan,” Boyd said honestly.
Raylan blinked. “So why are you doing this? Your daddy was a-. Was not a good man.”
Boyd smiled without any humour. “No, but he was still my daddy and it’s just plain rude to shoot a man’s daddy before he can do it himself.”

Summary
Spite is a fine motivator for intimacy. At least for Raylan, who has an allergic reaction to expressing his thoughts, feelings, emotions, and for Boyd, who never has learned how to love without a siren ringing in his ears.
Raylan and Boyd get married, because they love one another and genuinely want to spend the rest of their time together, until one or both of them inevitably die from pissing off the wrong person- who may still yet be the other. But they're bad at saying such things, so they find excuses, some spiteful pretense to put on paper.
It's the same with the pie. Spite is a beautiful reason to bake a pie. As long as you can couch it correctly, you never have to say "I love you."
After almost two decades of cohabitation and ritual and overt affection they forgot to hide behind something else, they aren't fooling anyone. Not even themselves.

Summary
Boyd had a nice weekend planned for him and Raylan. He had arranged things on his end so that he wouldn’t be bothered and planned to spend the weekend in, taking Raylan apart so that he could put him back together again and then relaxing. Of course, the best laid plans of mice and men…
He bit the tip of Raylan’s ear and while for all appearances he was whispering sweet nothings into a lover’s ear, his words matched the punishing grip he now had on Raylan’s neck and hip. “If you wanted to be treated like the slut you are, darlin’, you only had to say so. Acting like the slut you are, well that just gets you punished Raylan, surely you know that by now” Raylan shivered in response to that and stood up, going upstairs to his apartment where Boyd was guiding him, with an arm over his shoulder like friends, concealing the hand that was still on Raylan’s neck.

“You may,” Raylan says, “so long as you call me Raylan.”
“Are you going to arrest my daddy, Raylan?” she asks.
