Dr. Cavallo inspects his paper, 'Rx' visible on the top of the page. "I've got a few prescriptions approved for–" Gerard huffs, shaking his head. "You don't have a choice at the moment, Gerard."

He should. He's an adult, he's his own person. And he knows he doesn't need any of the shit they're trying to give him. None of these medications are going to bring him back to life, so why are they even trying?

"For your schizophrenia," God, how he hated that word. "You'll be given risperidone. You're also being prescribed sertraline, as OCD-like…" the words feathered out, Cavallo's lips stretching several centimeters too wide as he spoke.

His breaths shallowed, finding comfort in curling up in his chair. They're trying to blind him. They'll lie in wait until his eyes open again, and drag him down to where the undead walk. He'll never go home to Mikey.

    Summary

All throughout high school, Frank and Gerard were an unlikely, inseparable pair; Frank with his girlfriends and his guitar and unmatched charisma for his height, Gerard with his sketchbook and his Walkman and a kind of genius that only Frank seemed to get.

Frank was never great about talking about his feelings, and Gerard always felt the need to hide his. As they grow up and navigate life, careers and relationships, things get complicated, and no matter what, no matter how far they drift, they just can’t seem to stay apart.

    * This story takes place over the course of more than a decade, starting when Frank & Gerard are 18.

Nurse Iero is a fuckup. What else is new? But this fuckup deserves a special kind of punishment. And maybe in Ravencolm Hospital, servicing the prisoners in the adjoining penitentiary, he might find purpose again, maybe even peace. Turns out that's pretty fucking hard to do with a coworker like Gerard, with his inexplicable need to dress the way he does, and treat Frank like human flotsam. The rest of the town's creepy-ass denizens aren't helping, or the fact that it's in the middle of nowhere, without even a proper grocery store. Or maybe Frank just deserves to go through hell.

    Summary

It’s both Frank and Gerard’s first semester at The University. One is a late-coming freshman who would rather be anywhere but a lecture hall, and the other is a rookie professor trying to find his place in the world. What they have in common: BusComm101, Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10:00-12:00, and a predisposition for a sneaky love affair. Though Frank is battling demons that he thought he’d long since defeated, and Gerard is suffering from a seemingly-endless identity crisis, the two just might find peace in the chaos that is each other.
    ~

“Do all your office hours appointments go like this, Professor?” Frank said, his voice barely a whisper. His eyes fixated on a single strand of hair that had fallen in Gerard’s eyes, and his heart rate jumped as he awaited a response.

“You got me.” Gerard said with a grin, narrowing his eyes. He lifted his hands and shook them in a mimicked surrender. “I’m playing favorites.”

“I’ll be your favorite any day.”

The more they’ve walked, the more Ray has thought about it. And as the miles have gone by, Ray has started to think it doesn’t really matter anymore, does it? Queer, not queer, wanting Pete or not, none of it really matters when they’re this close to dying. He’s realizing now that what does matter is just what Pete had said before— this moment. If this moment was all he got, well. Ray wasn’t going to be known as the boy who wasted any more time.

“Look, asshole, do you want a job or not?” Mikey interrupts. “You said yourself you were bored. I know you can’t afford cigarettes anymore. Until the millions of jobs you applied for decide to call you back, this is the best you got.”

    Gerard grimaces.

“Besides,” Mikey continues after a beat, “you’d get to hang out with me. And Ray and Frank too, I guess. But at least you wouldn’t be loitering at my job instead of finding something else productive to do.”

Gerard looks at Mikey for a moment before groaning and tugging a hand through his hair. “Fine, you win. Brian, can I have an application?”

    “Ray, baby, wait—“

“Stop!” Ray screams, so loud his voice cracks. “God, f-fucking stop it with the ‘baby’ crap! You know, you m-m-made me — you made me think — I thought we were O-O-Orpheus and Eurydice, walking out of hell, you know?”

“Ray,” Pete says helplessly. “I don’t know what that means.”

His big, dumb cow eyes are mean with tears. “The poet,” he shoves Pete in the chest, “and the f-f-fucking corpse.”

Months after the Walk, months of recovery, and Ray brings Pete breakfast in bed. Things spiral from there.

Pete still dreams of that rainy night, despite his best efforts. The way he’d knelt, down on one knee. He’d felt like a real gentleman at the time, deciding to let Ray win, to let Ray go on and live his life. One good thing he could do, an act of love. Selfless. Pure. All the things he always wanted to be and fell short of. But Ray—no, that wasn’t good enough for Ray. […] And the last thing Ray said to him, the last thing he planned to ever say in this cruel world: That’s why I love you. I love you, Pete. […] Gathering Ray up in his arms, letting his head loll against his chest, and asking for his wish:

“I wish for him. I wish for Ray Garraty to live.” And then the Major tried to refuse. There can only be one winner, after all. “Then I want my ticket. Give me my ticket. Let me go with him. I want to be with Ray. That’s my wish. That’s my wish.”

There’s an ugly, red scar running down his forehead and around his temple. When he’d seen it for the first time, he’d touched it with hesitant fingers and told Pete they matched.

Ray didn’t just have to learn to walk again. He had to learn to use his hands, his arms, move his fingers. He had to learn to talk again. His first coherent word, that wasn’t just a jumble of gibberish: Pete.

It’s hard to keep it inside, all this love, all this want, when Ray places his head on his chest to sleep every night. No one’s ever done that to Pete before, fallen asleep with their head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat like it’s the only lullaby they’ll ever need.

God, Pete wishes he wouldn’t talk like that about himself, wouldn’t even think like that about himself. Ray isn’t broken. Ray’s beautiful. He’s the most alive person Pete’s ever met, so true and vulnerable in his grief and his anger and his happiness and his love. He’s the sort of person who makes every moment beautiful, even the tough ones.

He’d wrap his mouth around each individual finger, give them all the same attention. He’d suck love bites into the soft give of Ray’s inner thighs. Hell, he’d put his mouth to his toes and the empty spaces where toes are missing and the battered soles of his feet and to his armpits and elbows and the backs of his knees. He’d love Ray everywhere, before he ever touched either of their cocks.

He’d lay Ray down on a goddamn bed of rose petals and sing his praises to the heavens. Ray would be good and corrupted, ruined all over, but he’d be loved—and loved properly, like a daisy-fresh girl on her wedding night.

“But… you wished for me. I’m yours.”

      “I mean, look at us.”

      “Look at us,” Pete agrees.

Ray, all-American boy, Maine’s own. With a mom to love him and a daddy who taught him everything he could, with all these jumbled references to forbidden books Pete’s never even heard of in his head. Lily-white and easily sunburned. Who planned to kill the Major, who chose love instead, who laid himself down at Pete’s feet so that Pete could go on living. And Pete. Orphan, unwanted, fighting his whole life for somewhere to call home. Georgia didn’t want him, not after his parents died, and then nowhere else wanted him either. Jersey, New York, neither of the Carolinas. Friends and lovers were brief, more a place to sleep and warm up for the night than anything serious. A songwriter without an instrument. A fucking queer who didn’t even notice the most important person in his life was pushing himself to give him what he thought he owed.

The poet and the fucking corpse.

Ray’s wrong about that. Pete’s the fucking corpse. Pete’s fucking Frankenstein’s monster, the big green motherfucker with the stitches in his face and the bolts in his neck, made up of unwanted and unloved parts, begging without words to be kept safe and loved by gentle hands.

“Ray, I want you every moment of every goddamn day. I’ve wanted you since I first laid eyes on you. And I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry for it. I never wanted—when I wished for you, Ray, I wished for you to live. Not to be mine. Not to belong to me. Not to keep you. I just wanted you to be alive and breathin’. Because a world without Ray Garraty is not a world I want to be in. Because the world is brighter and better and more beautiful with you in it.”
