“Go on,” they say quietly, urging her on. They only realize how raspy their voice is in that moment, and soon after that they haven’t had anything to drink in at least a day. What have they even been doing? Their memory isn’t good at the best of times, but they’re usually capable of remembering the past few hours, at least.
“Do you wish you were human?” Helen asks, preemptively abashed. It’s the sort of shameful question Koschei and Theta would whisper to each other before either had regenerated once, unable to deny their curiosity nor their apprehension. “Oh, that came out wrong. I just mean… I used to wish I was like other people. People who never had to worry about where they fit.”

Their hearts don’t race in their chest as a human’s might after a nightmare. It’s hardly a nightmare, after all- merely a funhouse mirror’s distorted reflection of reality. It could not instill any more terror within them than there has already been throwing themself against the walls of this place, staring down at Ziba’s broken neck, awake but unable to move, trapped in their body in this prison on this planet in this moment.

It’s not a very promising sign, they think with a stifled sigh. “I’m well aware of my companion’s motivations,” he says stiffly, as insulted as if the Doctor had been accusing him rather than Brian. “I don’t need you to tell me who to trust.”
“Yet you’d trust an assassin over yourself,” they say, voice pitching up incredulously.
