"I'm not playing anything! I like him and you haven't claimed him." Jason knows. He would smell Billy on him if he had and if the bite was on any skin visible there would be a smattering of scales to let other mers know this one is off limits. Steve holds neither, meaning he is fair game.
"He's mine," Billy says angrily, tail twisting around Jason’s as he pushes him to the sandy bottom, a rock digging into his shoulder as he tries to push the bigger mer off.
"He's no one’s," Jason spits out, knocking his forehead into Billy's. It takes him more by surprise than hurts him and gives Jason the room he needs to wriggle free.

It was the splash that woke him, not that Steve slept all that deeply anymore. Even one trip to the Upside Down would be enough to keep anyone vigilant, let alone two. Steve lay in bed for a few more seconds, listening to the sounds of splashing water and trying to steel himself for whatever horror he was going to have to deal with now. He almost turned over, determined to just go back to sleep, but that thought only lasted long enough for him to blink.
With a sigh Steve climbed out of bed as quietly as possible, grabbing his trusty nail bat from next to his vanity as he went. He crept to the window, opening the curtains an inch and peering down at the glistening water of his pool, his shoulders instantly unwinding even as his confusion spiked.

“Do you like it?” the merfolk asks, staring at him with his deep blue eyes.
“You speak my language!” Steve exclaims, surprised.
“I speak many languages.” Billy simply replies, “But moans are the same in all the tongues.” He states, nibbling playfully at Steve’s nipple.
“Fuck! Ok… So you know that I'm not your mate, right?"
Billy grins, pushing on Steve’s groin. “Are you not?” Billy asks, “You smell like you are. And you taste like you are. And you're getting excited like you are.”
“That’s not… that’s a physical reaction. It’s not… we are not… we aren’t even the same species.”
Billy hums but he keeps petting at Steve, cutting his clothes with his talons before finally freeing his arms and his legs from the ropes. He gently brushes against Steve’s wrists and ankles, getting the blood flowing back.
“Can you swim?” Billy asks and Steve stares at him confused.

Murmuring and loud chatter. Bili puts his hand above his eyes, shielding the brightness. He’s above a ship and can see.. humans! Beings similar to mer’s yet legged. They’re foreign and dangerous, thriving in places uninhabitable to his kind. He racks his brain for any info but Father banned all books that mention them.
The net drops and instantly Bili attempts to clamber over the edge but someone shouts, there’s a swift kick to his lower body and he goes limp. Immobilised.
A man, brown curls falling round his shoulders dressed in black garb approaches. Bili attempts to wriggle and dodge the ropes and hands restraining him. Stilling instantly when there’s a knife at his throat.
The man leans close, his dagger creating pressure on Bili’s neck almost enough to cut. Almost.
“I ain’t never seen a mermaid before,”….
Swimming away from Heathar was the worse decision he could’ve made. What does a little fish do so far away from the sea?

When the training ends Steve brings Billy back to his tank. The merman is tired and he has red bruises where Neil hurt him.
“You ok?” It’s a stupid question, Steve knows that, but he can’t avoid it.
“Are you worried about me, Harrington? How sweet.” The merman replies, licking his sharp teeth “Maybe next time you’ll get into my tank I’ll keep you.”
“Fuck you, Billy!”
“Are you proposing, pretty boy?”
It’s just their usual bickering but Steve can feel that his cheeks are blushing.
“Oh, so you do have a crush on me. That makes so much sense: that’s why you are obsessed with me. Don’t worry, pretty boy, I’m not going to fuck you… at least not as you are thinking, but I’ll keep fucking with you because it’s the funniest thing that I can do in this stupid place.” Billy replies and then he gets underwater, while Steve stares at his big red tale covered in shimmering scales.
“He has an attitude, I’ll give him that.” Hargrove says appearing from nowhere “But stay away from him. He is still a mermaid and even if he hasn’t had the time to learn the songs from other mermaids he is still capable of convincing you to kill yourself in his tank. It would not be the first time.” -

Billy breached the surface, looking at the distance where a sparkling skyline of a vast city rose along the shore. The large structures climbed towards the sky, glinting, as tall as the deepest depth Billy had ever dared to dive to. What a world that must be, Billy thought wistfully. So full of life, so busy and chaotic. And somewhere in those glittering towers were people living out their lives. That was where he yearned to be. He longed to be among the people, to get lost in the crowds. To laugh, to cry, to live as the humans did.

Summary
Steve loses his school, and Billy finds him.

There is a sound, louder than the booms that come from above, echoing under the water with him. Steve is not comforted to realize it is laughter, a predator enjoying the chase no doubt. He works his fins harder but the thing is so big, even the change in the flow of water pushing at his back is not enough to escape.
Steve thrashes as a big hand catches him, the water too dark to see the scales, everything going darker as it closes in a fist around him. He is sure this is the end! This is how he dies gobbled up or perhaps merely crushed by some huge mer. What a terrible end. Steve does not want to die like this!
