“Should we bury her?” he asks. “Give her a little headstone? Here lies Lady Whistlebrew, may her spout rest in peace.”
Anton turns to stare at him — and abruptly realises how close they are. The warm press of Paul Baker’s shoulder against his. The faint trace of toothpaste and sleep still clinging to his breath. The last time they were this close, it was barely twelve hours ago. One minute they were laughing about fake marriages, and the next — they were kissing.
Kissing like it meant something.
Until Paul Baker had put a hand on Anton’s chest and placed a harsh distance between them.

Two men stood outside the door, each holding a bouquet of flowers. One had warm brown eyes and a neatly trimmed mustache; the other, piercing blue eyes and a scruffy beard.

Paul Baker turned slowly, eyes scanning the makeshift gathering like it might offer him answers he didn’t yet have. Billie gave him a smile and a nod. Samir gave a half smile. Issa stood still, with worry etched on her face. Finally, his eyes landed on Anton.
Anton, who had known exactly what he was thinking back at the bar. There was something about that night that stuck with him, something honest beneath all the rambling. With Anton, he felt oddly safe, anchored in a way he rarely let himself feel with anyone. He'd remembered everything, even the offhand, half-drunk joke Paul Baker made through a crooked grin about wanting glow sticks at his “real wedding.”
