They find themself idly fantasizing, more than once, about another life, in another universe, a teenaged bad-boy-but-slightly-less-fucked-in-the-head Lenny sneaking out at night in a beat-to-shit ancient pickup truck parked two blocks down and dodging streetlights to come stand on an upside-down slightly crumpled metal garbage can kept under Amy’s windowsill. Lenny’s kissing her as she leans out, stupid and grinning, untied sneaker strings hanging down from their tip-toes position and the scent of the morning glories growing up her walls all around them until a faceless Daddy Haller flips on the porch lights and slams open the door, shotgun in hand, and Lenny stumbles and falls backwards, rolling and scampering off into the night with their far-too-big jacket and fingerless gloves covered in dew and wet earth, laughing wildly.
She can’t always tell which one of them had penned the script and started playing that little scene on loop on the projector behind her eyes. -
