for a moment she didn’t understand what had pulled her out of sleep—only that her chest hurt and her pulse thundered like she’d been running. the dream clung to her in fragments, slippery and sharp. voices layered over one another, not loud but relentless, pressing in until her thoughts felt crowded.
i didn’t mean to.
i didn’t want to.
but you did.her fingers curled into the blankets. she expected cold stone. expected the crushing weight that sometimes followed the dream—the phantom sensation of metal and responsibility digging into her skull.

Summary
Of all of Scott's fears in coming to the Blue Kingdom's capitol city—dying in battle, being truly alone for the first time, how his father would handle everything—he did not think to worry about something so mundane as disease. Which really was a mistake on his part, since cities are practically synonymous with illness. The people, the tight quarters, the bodies from the war; all of it is a horrible sickness waiting to happen.
This is especially true when the new monarch of the Red Kingdom brings the plague right across the river. And when Scott starts coughing.

Scott gets sick with what he thinks is the plague soon after arriving to the Blue Kingdom for his compulsory service. He might just worry himself to death before the illness can get him. A couple of knights disagree.

Scott Springwell is a famous thief of Skyblue Kingdom. He's charming, and quick on his feat. Never once has he been caught by the knights that patrol the streets, though some of it is thanks to his friend, Drift, who distracts his targets and makes sure he gets out of trouble in pubs.
One day, though, a heist goes awry, and Scott finds himself behind bars in the royal dungeons. He plans to kill himself before anyone could punish him, but when the king and queen call for his presence, it isn't to choose his fate, but to demand for his help.
A killer is loose in Skyblue Kingdom, and after weeks with no luck of finding him, the king and queen decided to use a different approach: hire a criminal.
Now, Scott is forced to help a monarchy he hates, keep a low profile, and worst of all: he's stuck with a knight surveilling him 24/7.
At first, Scott tried his best to rebel against the knight, but after failing every single time, he had to learn to adapt to his new companion. Dragging him through the kingdom, Scott simply wants the knight to leave. He cant stand the thought of eventually caring for another person. Not after last time.
But fate has its funny ways, and perhaps this mission will change him. -

Maybe the reason why his eyes hurt so much is because the sun is staring right back at him, taunting him with its burning, burning rays. His retinas hurt. They shouldn’t, right? That’s bad, right? Scott doesn’t know—if he knew he’d probably stop staring at the sun, or maybe he wouldn’t, maybe he’d keep begging, anyway. It doesn’t hurt to try. Curling vines wrap around his hands and feet before pulling him closer to the ground. The prickly vines weep with him, drawing tears of a crimson red liquid from his skin. It hurts, but what doesn’t at this point? At least the thorns understand his pain.

It’s not his eyesight that tells him who this is—it’s the aching chill of their armor, it’s the soothing voice curling around his body, it’s the calloused hands gently pulling back the thorny vines cutting his skin, it’s the faint smell of smoke and cinnamon hanging around them like a brand. “Nom…?” Scott hears himself ask, his voice broken and quiet as a whisper muffled against the fabric of Nom’s shirt where his chest plate has been discarded.

He tilted his head to adjust the heavy weight of a thick, golden crown, scanning the crowd with an unreadable glint in his eye. He gazed over the crowd until his eyes landed on Scott.
Scott sucked in a sharp breath as he studied him, not with a look of hate-not like the king of the reds should have-but with a look of genuine curiosity. The corner of his mouth quirked upwards, and he waved.
After a moment of hesitation, Scott waved back.
As the arguments around them grew more heated, nobody noticed their little interaction. A spark of friendship between rival kingdoms.
“I’m Cam,” the young king whispered.
“I’m Scott,” the mage whispered back.
Scott felt a smile light up on his face. Maybe the reds weren't so bad as Owain said.

Those few months of preparation time went significantly faster than any of them could have really anticipated, progress was steady and noticeable as everyone steadily began to feel more and more capable with the task at hand. Since the day at the meeting and those following weeks, everyone had slotted into some semblance of organisation. And every day felt busier than the last.
