Summary
"May I ask you a question?" she asked softly, lowering her head so as not to see his face, because it was unbearable to look at his lips.
"It wasn't an act," he replied without hesitation, noticing how everything in Karen had changed. He decided to clarify, "The last time I... walked you home."
"Then what was it?"
"I don't know," he sighed. "But I wasn't lying back then. That night was perfect and remains the best day I've ever had. Well, except for the Yakuza somewhere in the background..."
Karen didn't laugh at his joke, instead stepping forward and placing her hand on his chest, just above his heart. She sighed languidly, closing her eyes as he took hold of her in return, his hand trembling slightly. He promised her he wouldn't lie, he said he hadn't lied then, but she needed to know exactly how true what he was saying now was.
"Now repeat it."
"I'm sorry it ended like this," Matt said, his voice rising slightly. "There's nothing I regret more than that. And I'd like to fix it, but... I'm afraid that train is long gone."
"Is it though?"
"At least for now."
