      "¿Lo sientes?", repite con voz débil. Debió haberlo oído mal.

      —Sí. —Nunca había oído su voz así: aguda, extraña y pálida. Sus largos y hermosos dedos recogen un par de pétalos muertos junto al jarrón de rosas, frotándolos entre el índice y el pulgar hasta que no son más que polvo. Él no la mira—. Por no ser lo que necesitas, al final.

      De repente, todo en el mundo deja de importar. Al final. Porque él es justo lo que ella siempre ha necesitado, y si este es el final, no es por él. Es por ella. Siempre se trataría de ella, ¿no? De lo que pudiera manejar, de lo que pudiera aguantar. De si podría encajar con él como lo habían hecho sus otras parejas.

      —No es lo que yo necesito —dice ella—. Es lo que tú necesitas. —Frunce las cejas, confundido—. ¿Verdad?

      “¿No lo es?” responde ella dubitativamente.

      Colin la mira con ojos genuinamente desconcertados, como si no supiera qué pensar de las palabras de Penélope. Ella lo observa mientras lo sostiene, con la garganta seca y el corazón latiendo con fuerza. Lo observa mientras intenta desentrañar el campo minado de palabras que acaban de recorrer juntos.

      —Penélope —dice poniéndose de pie—, ¿quieres estar conmigo?

      "No, ese es precisamente el punto", dice Colin con impaciencia, y por un momento suena como Anthony, lo que la haría sonreír en casi cualquier otra situación. "¿Quieres tener una relación conmigo?"

      "No importa lo que yo quiera", le recuerda, y ahora grita, lo cual es verdaderamente humillante, pero Colin no se inmuta. La mira fijamente con ojos acerados que parecen incapaces de apartarse de su rostro. "No puedo darte lo único..."

      —Lo único que no pedí —grita él, igualando su tono. Penélope retrocede, sorprendida.

      "¿Qué quieres decir con que no—?"

      Parece como si quisiera arrancarse el pelo.

      —No necesito eso, Penélope. No lo necesito, parece que eres tú quien lo necesita con tanta urgencia, pero no digas que soy yo quien lo quiere, porque no lo quiero. Quiero pasar mi vida contigo. Incluso cuando me estás volviendo loca con esta mierda, sigo queriendo pasar mi vida contigo. ¿Sabes lo loco que es sentir eso por alguien que aparentemente no siente lo mismo y luego que actúe como si fuera tu culpa que no puedan estar juntos?

      Penélope se desploma de nuevo, cayendo de bruces sobre la pila de cartas que habían puesto sobre la mesa, uno frente al otro. Se traba con las palabras mientras intenta seguirle el ritmo, pero él reparte las cartas tan rápido que no sabe bien qué coger o descartar.

      —¡Deja de decirme lo que necesito! —exige. Ella nota que está furioso, pero hay un dejo de desesperación en su voz—. Te diré lo que necesito. Te necesito ... Necesito que quieras aguantar conmigo aunque no sea fácil, y es cierto, puede que nunca superemos esto, pero necesito que no dejes que te moleste si en realidad no te molesta. Siento que solo te importa porque crees que tienes que hacerlo, y te digo que no debería. Porque me da igual. De verdad que no me importa.
