Zuko and Sokka are opposites. So, naturally, they don’t mix. Not ever. Not even if Sokka keeps going back, lying to himself by saying that it’s just for information and that he’s not totally and completely falling in love with a Fire Nation prince.

Summary
The bath takes care of the sweat. Takes care of the burnt bits of skin and fat that still cling to his palm. Zuko scrubs his body until it’s raw, blushing red; he dunks his head under the hot water and stays there, staring up at the dark, vaulted ceiling of the washroom until his lungs run out of breath to use.
The oil of honeysuckle and opium and cinnamon, sweet and sharp and earthy, does not wash the stench of scorched flesh out of his nose.Zuko falls asleep on the evening of his official coronation, when he’s twenty-one-years old and has finally reached his majority. Zuko wakes on the morning of the Agni Kai with his father, eight years earlier.
This is annoying for several reasons, like the fact that the War is still ongoing, that he has zero friends, and that Ozai is not in jail.

Summary
After the events of War Crimes, Sokka and Zuko have escaped Zhao’s warship and are fleeing across the Earth Kingdom. As well as unfamiliar terrain, they have to navigate their shared trauma, work out where they fit into the war, and their place in each others lives.
Sokka is aware that being friends with the enemy is going to bring complications, but he probably should have guessed that being friends with Zuko in particular, was going to be a bit like dunking your head repeatedly into a bucket of angry Fire Ferrets.
Katara is also grappling with the confusion of befriending an enemy, something that doesn’t prove as difficult as she had expected with the bond of shared, furious grief bridging old wounds. (Learning a new way to look at her bending doesn't hurt either)
Azula, struggling with the Fire Lord’s mistrust, encounters a few nasty surprises and has to make some difficult decisions. Luckily, she is a great deal better at making sensible choices than her brother.
Her father may have made a slight tactical error.

Summary
Azula is broken. Mentally, physically, emotionally broken. Her brother, the ruler of her nation, hates her. The only one who ever loved her is locked in prison. Her friends betrayed her. Her enemies thought her pathetic. She was broken, wasn't she? Well why not break herself more? Maybe, if she broke herself enough, it wouldn't hurt anymore.

Azula is hurt in almost every way, and she just wants to make it all stop. In order to do this, she hurts herself more and more, thinking maybe -just maybe- she can become accustomed to the pain. Katara has something to say about that.

Summary
Katara stood in the aftermath, blood drying up in her hair, dripping down her hands, and staining the dirt on which she stood. The bodies from which it came from lay on the very same dirt. Grotesque. Disgusting. Twisted and turned every which way. Dead. No. Not just dead. Killed. In the most inhumane of ways. She stared at her hands. Her gaze unblinking and empty. In her mind's eye she watched the events unfold for the nth time. Still not quite grasping the situation. She hears someone call out to her. Though her mind, busy torturing her with recent past events, does not immediately register the words.
"Hey." The voice says again. Katara jolts, finally coming back to herself. She turns around, fixing her wide, terrified and still unblinking gaze at the person in question.
Azula sighs. Katara tries to determine its cause. It did not sound like disappointment. Nor did it sound like one of exasperation. She thinks it sounds almost sad. She's proven right when Azula's features soften until she looks pained. Azula looks apologetic as she neared, steps tentative as if Katara were a wild animal she feared spooking.
"Come on," Azula says, voice so very soft. "Let's get you cleaned up."
