“Arthur,” Merlin gasps, and rushes toward him. It’s been so long. So incredibly long, he misses him, he just wants to- to feel him, so he knows his other half is alive-
And Arthur stumbles back and pulls out a sword. Dull, secondhand, rusted. It’s not Excalibur, Merlin realizes dazedly, and then he sees that Arthur’s gaze holds nothing but distrust and suspicion.
“Who the hell are you?” he snaps, and if Merlin ever thought witnessing Arthur's death was painful, it’s nothing compared to this agony.
