He could feel it, now, reaching for something more. Something more than Spoke’s loud voice over the chatter of wherever he was, more than the plush chair he was slumped against. Parrot deserved more. He wanted more. He’d come here in pursuit of happiness, hadn’t he worked hard enough for it by now?
Title from a misremembered lyric from Devil’s Angel that promptly became a cricket-ball weight bludgeon of inspiration to the back of my head :)

Either way, he was going nowhere. Not with this collar around his throat, barely giving him enough space to breathe, and Clown’s hand, resting almost innocently across his waist.
Parrot felt like crying. He couldn’t even see Wifies from this angle, although he was sure the dog hybrid was still there. Kneeling beside Clown’s chair, staring at the floor and trying as hard as Parrot was not to think about what they’d gotten themselves into.
