“Hey, does Nancy usually take care of you? I was just wondering since I haven’t actually seen her do it and I’ve been lately, not that its an issue.” Eddie blurts out, completely casually.
Steve turns, looks at him, and Eddie realizes that the other is very confused.
“What are you talking about?”
“What do you mean what am I talking about?”
“I mean, why would Nancy need to ‘take care of me’? Nothing’s wrong with me.”
Eddie’s head cocks to the side, inspecting Steve as he processes everything.
“Y’know, when you’re feeling like- younger. When you’re tired or upset.”
“I seriously have no idea what you’re talking about, man.”
“Seriously?” Eddie almost laughs out loud.
How had this happened three times and not once did Eddie ever think to ask him about it? it never really occurred to him that Steve might’ve genuinely been doing it on accident without even knowing why he did it.
OR
Three times Steve regresses on accident and Eddie isn't phased, just going along with it. And one time Eddie realizes Steve has no idea he's doing it at all. They're both a bit oblivious but it all turns out okay in the end

What had gone wrong? How did they both go so far in the wrong direction?
It had to be his own fault, surely. Maybe it was the way he couldn’t process death, and moved on like nothing happened the best he could, shoving mismatched items into that d20 shaped hole in his life that was Eddie Munson. Maybe, it was because Dustin could tell he’d just been plain jealous of all Eddie’s time spent in Steve’s shoes, being so wanted and cherished and needed by the younger. That was Steve’s job, didn’t Dustin know that?OR (I couldn't pick just one moment)
The flight of stairs before him turned to goo, falling down, down, down and forcing Steve’s mental mission to halt. He stepped back, his mouth agape and eyes wide, looking up to realize that the flights above them had also melted. His heart raced as he matched its pace, scrambling around to find a way up— any way up.
He couldn’t do this again, not them.OR
Steve’s aftermath of his fight with Dustin, and a deep look inside his brain all the way through to the ladder scene. He deserved some more depth- again- so i gave it to him c: and then for bonus points I made him hard of hearing and lowkey autistic bcs I said so, but its not the main focus of the fic obvSeries

Summary
"Because- I really missed you. I missed my best friend.”
Dustin stilled, but the tears welling up in his eyes didn’t.
“I missed my best friend, too.” Dustin smiled softly.
Steve nodded, fumbling with the makeshift spear in his hands nervously, shifting his thumb up and down and up and down and up and down and Dustin finally looked up from the man’s hands to see the lump in his throat and the tremble of his lips.
“And I was angry, because he didn’t deserve to die. I told him don’t be a hero and he went right ahead and did the stupidest but bravest thing he could. It was a dumb call but it was the right one and he did save you. I Just sometimes want to believe he was dumb and he did it for nothing, because then I can be mad at him for leaving."
OR
A rewritten version of the “You die, I die” scene because they deserved to dig deeper, and Steve deserved to grieve too and have his own problems beyond just missing his friend. And he we deserved a sprinkle of steddie + a teeny bit of my own personal headcanons. So I wrote them the more emotional and lengthy conversation that they needed but didn’t get for the sake of time.

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit…”
Steve let Eddie’s voice serve as the kind of background noise that kept your feet planet firmly on the ground, like the kind of noise that was like a hand on your shoulder or a blanket around your arms. He wasn’t entirely paying attention as he sorted and sorted, mixed the pieces of his Russian nesting dolls up, and had fun sorting them back out into their proper sets.
Eventually he sighed and discarded them neatly in a row on his nightstand in favor of curling up next to Eddie, leaning over the look at the pages as he leaned hard against the man’s arm.
Eddie didn’t tease him, didn’t scold him; he just lifted his arm up and let Steve crawl under it, laying his head on the place where Eddie’s chest met his shoulders as he continued to read and shifted so Steve could see the pages, even though Eddie assumed he wasn’t really reading it.
OR
Now that Steve had a real term for that weird feeling in his head, it freaks him out a bit when it happens again. But ofc Eddie's there and he makes sure Steve knows its alright, hes safe. Fluff ensues, Eddie reads the Hobbit, Steve lets himself just be little c:

Summary
Eddie rocked side to side with Steve awkwardly bunched up in front of him. Today’s events must’ve just been the nail in the coffin, he figured. He let Steve cry a bit more, until his erratic breathing started to get a little out of hand.
“Alright, alright, buddy, you’ve gotta breathe, please. Come on, take some deep breaths.”
Steve could feel Eddie’s deep breathing against his own chest, and he tried to mirror it; tried to match it as perfectly as he could. He tried his best to calm down, focusing on the feeling of rocking side to side and the faint smoke smell of Eddie’s jacket. Soon enough, he just felt tired as his sobs subsided and he went slightly limp, knees tucked up under Eddie’s legs in a way that was nowhere near comfortable anymore.
He pulled away, rubbing his eyes with a couple tiny hiccups. But he didn’t let go, just moved his hand to clutch Eddie’s sleeve as a bit of embarrassment bubbled up in his chest.
OR
Steve has to get bloodwork done, and Robin isn’t there to stay with him when he gets home like she always does when he’s having a starcourt-related bad day. So he calls Eddie, and FINALLY talks about what happened to him down there.
