Summary
“I don’t aim to be overly bold but the moment I saw you...” He paused, letting his gaze wander for a fraction before meeting his eyes again. “…figured I had to know you. Maybe even have you, if luck’s on my side.”
“Talk like that isn't exactly casual,” Cloud felt his pulse tick, but he managed to keep his voice steady. “You strike me as a whole mess of trouble.”
The man didn't respond, but his eyes pointedly traveled down from his face, examining the rest of him. Or as much as was visible, while sitting down. The scrutiny made him shift uncomfortably.
“Name’s Zack," he offered a self-assured smile, eyes looking straight into his own again. "I’m hopin’ it will be somethin’ to remember.”

Cloud was finally given the title of the deputy, just before two strangers entered his town and shook up his life.

Summary
Cloud and Zack ride together towards Midgar, chasing the trail Sephiroth left behind. Cloud swore to himself that he'd never forgive Zack, that he'd hang on to his hatred, for what he'd done to him - but he underestimated how hard it'd be to keep his distance from the only person by his side, especially while watching him fall apart under the guilt.

Summary
Offering his body in exchange with feeling some semblance of affection had somehow become the norm fairly quickly. Anything was fair long as he could forget about how the townsfolk looked at him with pity, how the boys his age avoided him, how his father had left an empty space in his house he couldn't fill no matter what.
