Summary
The thing about time rifts was that, while most people who’d ever sailed a boat or flown a plane had heard of them, almost nobody believed in them. They were like UFOs or the Bermuda Triangle in that way.
Two years after Top Gun, Maverick encounters an urban legend, gets thrown back in time, and saves Goose's life. It doesn't fix things the way he thought it would. Goose is alive, but he hasn't forgotten what it's like to grieve for him. Goose is by his side, but Iceman doesn't even know him anymore.

Summary
Maverick was looking at him again. Staring, more like it.
Iceman could feel the weight of his gaze, even in the darkened room, as Viper and Blackwood went through the latest results. It had been the same for the past couple days, ever since that one hop.
When Maverick gets thrown back in time to save Goose's life, Iceman has to deal with the consequences to his own life. He falls into a downward spiral, loses Top Gun, then learns that not everything is as it seems and that for the right person, risks are worth taking.
