Summary
A familiar fear began rising like bile in his gut. Maybe he wasn’t the only honest person amidst a group of pretenders, maybe there really was something wrong with him. Something that blocked him from seeing what others see and feeling what others feel. Something that made him a defective human being.
Maybe he had been born that way. Born with something fundamental missing. Maybe that’s why people saw nothing behind his eyes.
OR: Ogata goes to an art museum with Vasily and ends up having an existential crisis.

Summary
As he slowly stepped closer, his eyes traced over the mangled halo of spattered blood encircling the Russian’s head. It was hard to tell if the man had noticed Ogata’s approach or not. He certainly wasn’t reacting to him. Although he appeared to be at least semi-conscious, and his breathing was very labored. Ogata couldn’t blame him. The pain must’ve been excruciating. Judging by the placement of the entry wound, most of his back teeth must’ve been completely shattered, in addition to a partially – or even fully severed tongue.
He might never be able to talk normally again. He might also be forced to eat only soft foods for the rest of his life. The thought made Ogata smile. He wanted a closer look at the wounds. If he tilted the Russian’s head the right way, would his fragmented teeth fall out of his mouth? Maybe even his gnarled tongue? Ogata felt giddy just thinking about it.

Summary
Ogata had been willing to die because he was unable to bring himself to kill Vasily. The moment he accepted that reality, his pride as an expert sniper had been tarnished. Vasily knew this because he was in the exact same position. Only, he wasn’t prepared to end it all like Ogata. In fact, he fought like hell to survive their encounter.
Why did he even bother fighting? He didn’t exactly have much to live for, but... he had something. What did Ogata have? Vasily didn’t know him well enough to say, but his actions suggested that the answer to that question was bleak. Did Ogata truly have nothing outside of being a sniper?
Did he have nothing outside of that wildcat persona?
