Summary
Sam wasn't the oldest of Liam and Clara Grace's four sons. He also had spent many years in foreign countries as a diplomat (that was his official job, at least). Because of his service to the Crown during those years, Sam had been selected to serve as a knight in the Order of the Most Noble Knights of the Kingdom, under the legendary–and equally feared–Artemis Aphrodite Procter. While his brothers were known to the local communities for their business ventures and their presence in high society, Sam was in many ways a newcomer. Plus, he didn't really think of himself as high society.

Summary
The father-to-be, a remarkable knight and farmland owner, preferred to stay in a corner of the living room, alight with the glow of the fireplace, to mull over things in the relative quiet. The staff let him be, “poor first-time dad”. Only Mrs Patridge seemed to be seeing through his pensiveness and introspection. She poured a cup of tea for Sam, even though he hadn't asked for it.
"Now, Sir Samuel," said Mrs Patridge, steaming golden tea pouring delicately in the porcelain cup, "that is no way to welcome a child, all withdrawn and sulking."

Summary
He was trying to steel himself for the onslaught of mildly invasive questions Bianca was no doubt putting in order in her mind. Fair enough–asking a childhood friend to marry you simply because marriage was unavoidable anyway qualified as bizarre behavior. It wasn't like Sam had ever met his suggested bride-to-be.

Summary
"I like her, Sam," Ed broke the tranquility of their walk. "Your fiancée, Natalie."
Sam was still in his ceremonial robes, much like Ed. He rubbed a hand over his face. "I'm glad."
Ed put a hand on his shoulder to stop the young knight. "You don't look thrilled."
"No, Ed, I really am. It's just the travel and all the preparations we have going on at home."
"The Sam I know can do thrilled alongside tired." Ed was giving him a fatherly look of concern now.

Summary
"You did well," said Sam hoarsely, paradoxically not raising his voice higher to be heard over the hustle and bustle of the midwives and Sam's mother, Lady Clara Grace, tending to the baby in their first moments. Too late, Natalie realized that Sam's relieved smile had turned into a teary one. She tried to stroke his cheek, but Sam was pressing his lips to the back of her palm, his eyes tightly closed to control the tears.
Natalie finally managed to summon the energy to run her finger over the side of Sam's cheek. "We're quite alright," she said in a breathy voice–the best she could manage.

Summary
Natalie closed her eyes again, her head on Sam's shoulder. "He needs a name."
"Yeah," agreed Sam, tucking the white knit blanket around the baby more snuggly, "he does. How about after one of our fathers?"
"Why not give him his own name?"

Summary
Aisha reached out her hand for him to take. Roger sat by her feet, facing her and rubbing her hand in his.
"What do you think it will be?" Aisha asked him. "The baby."
He kissed the back of her palm. "I don't want to guess," he replied. "Both options seem equally nice to me."
"Chloe refuses to tell me what she thinks."
"I think she's only being professional. You've taught her that." He kissed the back of her palm again.
"Please, tell me what she thinks. I know she's told you."
Roger shook his head. "I know what Chloe would prefer," he said with an honest smile, "but you'll have to find out for yourself."
Aisha smiled. "Wow, you're rude!"

Summary
There had been no balls at the Joseph Estate since Natalie's passing, despite Sam's mother insisting that he take part in social life to find a well-made woman (“Do it for your kids, Sam,” Lady Clara Grace would say with a sigh). Anyway, Sam was perfectly happy staying in his corner with a flute of ice-cold champagne in hand. Bianca and Valerie apparently weren't similarly content because they insisted that he meet the new designer of their business, who was also an accomplished artist.

Summary
The glass-and-wood doors leading to the balcony at Sam and Mariam's room had also been thrown open–by Sam. He was pacing the balcony with his new daughter in his arms. He kept turning back to look into the room at Mariam, who had been sleeping. Now she was starting to wake up.
