Summary
If Joker were easy to kill, he would have been dead a hundred times over by now. Jason would know. And if somebody had finally gotten to him, they would want to make it known. They would be parading his head around the streets, hanging his corpse outside of the police headquarters. Who the hell in this dirtied goddamn city has the skill to kill the Joker and the brains to do it quietly?
Somebody with power and influence, obviously. Somebody who's been doing this for a long fucking time. Somebody with a vested interest in subtlety. Somebody like—
"Motherfuck," Jason bites out. "No fucking way."
He's learned, over the years, that he's at his best when he's got direction. When he's pointed towards something. Right now, Jason's got a hunch, and in the absence of any other sense of meaning, he's running towards it full speed.
Forty-two minutes later, Sofia Gigante is opening the door to her apartment, cutting him off mid-knock.

Summary
"I don't have to take this," Alessio says, like he's only just decided. He stands, all in a rush, but Jason is standing too. He has his gun out before Alessio does, pointed right in-between his eyes. Alessio freezes, gun only halfway out of his coat.
"Sofia," Jason says, asking without asking.
She considers it for a moment, she really does. She taps a knuckle underneath her chin and finally says, "Give it a second." To Alessio, "Is this your final answer?"
Alessio looks over at Jason. "You do what she tells you?" He says. "Follow her around like some kind of dog? That's it? Is that really the life you want for yourself?"
Jason is quiet for one, two, three heartbeats. Sofia watches and waits for his reaction. "Guess it's better than rummaging around in somebody else's scraps," he says, tone dripping with disdain. "Remind me which one of us is supposed to be the dog again?"
"See?" Sofia says, looking back to Alessio with a smile. "He's learning."

Summary
“That’s what I get for not watching my six, huh?” Jason says. “Dumbass. Anyway.”
He moves one already bloodsoaked hand up to the handle and tugs, with an awful wet noise and a painful gasp.
“Stop, stop!” Dick shouts, grabbing at his hands. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
“What the hell does it look like I’m doing?” Jason says stupidly. “I’m making this quicker for the both of us.”
When Jason came back, he came back with a few—quirks, he’s called them. One is the murder. Another one is whatever he has going on with noted crime boss Sofia Gigante, which he defensively refuses to elaborate on whenever Dick asks. The last one is the ability to get shot in the head and sit up five minutes later to bitch about the weather. Which Dick has seen him do. Which Dick hasn’t stopped having fucking nightmares about.

Summary
The assassination attempt comes as a surprise. Maybe it shouldn’t—Sofia’s been doing this long enough to make more than a few enemies. But her reputation has proved a useful deterrent, and an even more useful deterrent is the Red Hood’s constant shadow. There hasn’t been a real attempt on her life in at least a year. Possibly a year and a half, if Sofia chooses to be slightly stricter with her definition of the word attempt. A year is long enough to develop blind spots, to fall prey to lapses in judgment. A year is long enough to be taken aback by the bullet that rips through her side when she gets up to speak at some routine social luncheon, tearing through her neatly pressed cream-colored blazer. Sofia has just enough time to be dismayed over the blood stain before the impact unbalances her, sending her reeling backwards.
She doesn’t make it to the floor. Two hands are gripping at her shoulders, hoisting her back up to her feet. Sofia moves her heavy head to the side, catching the blurry, scarlet sphere of Red Hood’s helmet hovering above her.

Carefully, Dick lifts his hands up to his neck and taps at the hollow of his throat. It takes Jason a second to process, but Dick knows it the moment he does. Jason's never been able to keep his emotions to himself. They're written all over his paling face, in the way he presses his lips together and swallows, hard.
"He did do this to you," Dick says, and he's surprised, somehow, by how emotionless he sounds. "Didn't he?"
