Dan is a side character in A Sunny Friendship? and Embrace the Sunshine, both of which are kind of fanfics of fanfics... specifically AslansGirl13's Snow Queen fanfics that introduce the Sunshiners, former gladiators of Sarthe that were freed and brought to Verglas and choose to serve in its army. Dan was introduced as a character that's a little more reluctant to trust or be around the Sunshiners, but his little siblings just keep bringing them around, so he's gonna have to learn to deal with it. It begins in between the last chapter and the epilogue of Sunny Friendship and between chapters ten and eleven of Embrace the Sunshine.

And at the end of the week, he plans to put them in the gladiator pit to fight for their lives.
I can't make this fic jive in the timeline with my other works. It's truly a stand-alone. An AU. A "what if."

More than two years ago, there was a discussion on KM Shea's Discord about an AU where Farrin and Rakel's progeny married into the Zancaran royal line. I loved the idea, but hadn't had a good chance to write it.
Well, during Inktober, 2024, I decided to use the list (in no particular order) to write the story of how all that may have come about. This fic is the result.

Summary
This fic comes after the Mage Hater? as well as Sunny Friendship and Embrace the Sunshine, where Dan and Asher are introduced. It is also after many of AslansGirl13's Sunshiner fics and exists in the same world. I was going to put this with the Mage Hater short, but it's gotten to be darker than anticipated and I want to leave the short on it's own as it kind of sets up for Glint of Sunshine a bit. So, for this Dan has started his journey of coming to like and work with mages, but he's still unnerved by it. He and his brother set out as part of a mission to rescue more of the gladiators from Sarthe, and their time in the pit is where the mature rating comes in. As with all my work, it is clear of swearing and spice, but with slavery very active in Sarthe it's got some darker or more intense emotional moments.
