Summary
A weird part of Jayce looked forward to their fights. It was the only time he got to see Viktor. Or what ever it was that Viktor had become. Sometimes, it felt like before, when they worked together, those not-so-rare nights their brains were firing on all cylinders, and they finished each other’s thoughts and sentences and equations. Sometimes it felt like Viktor might kill him and Jayce thought that might be okay. If he were normal, he’d probably have stopped going into the field years ago. Conflict of interest plus several old injuries that made him slower (at least half were courtesy of Viktor) plus all the politicking he should actually be doing. But all of that was stupid, he’d worry too much about Cait, and, the quiet part he couldn’t tell her, he wouldn’t get to see Viktor.
Ten years into the war, Viktor saves Jayce's life and Jayce finally shows up at Viktor's doorstep.

Summary
Viktor appeared warily in the entrance to the laboratory, still cautious, clutching a few of the glowing flowers to his chest. The doctor already knew he was coming. Rio had been trilling quietly like an excited dog for the past five minutes. The boy had remained silent, waiting to be noticed. That was good. The doctor wouldn’t abide any noisy children in his lab who asked foolish questions.
“You can come in,” the doctor said.
The sound of Viktor’s cane on the uneven stone floor of the cavern echoed softly through the room. The doctor frowned. He wanted to examine that leg, see if any of his theories, his new serum, would be of use. But that would frighten the boy. Best to wait.A small boy shows up at Singed's door. He doesn't quite know what to make of it.

Summary
The lightning flashed again and there was a crack of thunder that shook the windowpanes and there, on the balcony, was a small, dark shape. Viktor narrowed his eyes and got up from his place on the couch to get a better look. The lightning flashed again and there was no mistaking it. A small creature was on the balcony.
For all his admiration of the storm from inside the warmth of Jayce’s apartment, Viktor had no interest in going outside. The wet pavement on the balcony would be treacherous for his new prosthetic leg and he had no desire to sit shivering in a wet sweater, but there was another flash, and the little creature was highlighted again. The storm was getting worse. Whatever it was out there wouldn’t last the night and he wouldn’t let it die, not if he could do something about it.Viktor finds a cat. It promptly adopts him.

Summary
Powder did not think about the bridge. She didn’t dream about it either. Or she said she didn’t. Vi knew better. Every night for those first few weeks, she heard her little sister crying at night for their parents, but they were gone. Vi would crawl down from the top bunk of the bed Vander had found in a glorified junk heap and sit next to Powder, drawing circles in her back just like their mother had done. It had always calmed her down. Powder had always had fits.
Vi misses her parents and Powder. At least this time, she's not alone.

Summary
Her ears perked suddenly. Downstairs, there was noise, but not enforcer noise. A shuffle and a dull thud, like footsteps. Jinx cockered her head to the side, listening. If whoever it was saw her, she might be handed over. If she killed them, she’d draw attention. Same result. A conundrum.
“Think,” Silco said.
“Yeah, yeah,” Jinx muttered, moving quiet as a mouse to the part of the floor that had fallen away.
There was a figure trying to hide on the floor below. Thin, wrapped in a cloak, crutch. A hand reached out to adjust the hood. It was violet and metallic. Which was neat.
Six weeks after Silco died, Jinx finally makes a friend.

Summary
“Get up, Mel. Pull yourself together,” her mother said not unkindly when she finally turned to her attention on her.
Mel stood and gulped back more tears, breathing deeply until they stopped. Then her mother smiled at her and wiped at the tear tracks with her large thumb.
“That’s my girl. Remember, Medardas are not weak,” her mother continued.
“I know, mother,” Mel replied, voice still thick with tears.
“Good. What are Medardas?”
“Strong, ruthless, loyal, clever, and uncompromising,” Mel said immediately.
Her mother nodded her approval with a small smile.Mel tries and fails to uphold her family's virtues.

Summary
Viktor sighed and pulled the next resume to him. Then he stopped with a jolt. He knew the handwriting and the name. Emery Ashby. Viktor dated him for about six months after he had become Heimerdinger’s assistant. He thought he loved him. It did not end well. Viktor shoved the resume aside as if it were the most distasteful thing on the planet. He wanted to go home then. The memory suddenly felt too fresh.
A moment later, Jayce set a mug on Viktor’s work bench, which pulled him out of his thoughts, and dragged over his own chair to sit next to him. He’d been doing that lately, getting in Viktor’s space. He found, much to his surprise, that he did not mind.
“Did I get it right?” Jayce asked as Viktor took a sip.
“Eh, closer,” Viktor said with a small smile.
“I don’t know how you can stand it like that.”
“Life is brief. I refused to spend it drinking bitter things.”Viktor and Jayce stay up to late and talk about past relationships. Viktor loves Jayce. It is inconvenient.

Summary
From across the room, he heard a delicate peel of laughter. Mel was pretending to laugh at whatever Councilor Hoskel had just said. It was hard not to look, and became harder when Viktor caught his eye from his place on the other side of Hoskel gave an exaggerated eyeroll. Jayce gave him a small smirk in return, which earned him a very insistent and surprisingly painful poke on his shoulder from Cait.
“Ow! Why?” he said, attention finally fully on her.
“You’re being rude,” Cait said, sounding alarmingly like her mother. “What are you even looking at?”
Cait swiveled her head before Jayce could stop her and then looked back at him with a very large grin.A few months after discovering Hextech, Jayce finds himself at a party with the two people he loves and is too afraid to tell.

Summary
He was nearly done when he heard the door to the lab shut quietly, and every single bad scenario ran through his mind. Enforcers. Mel’s angry and vengeful warlord mother. Jayce. He didn’t know which he hoped it was. When he saw it was Jayce, he thought he might rather face the warlord.
“What are you doing here?” Jayce asked, voice weirdly calm, as if he had walked in on Viktor still working at two in the morning, like when he used to stop by after banquets and galas. Viktor’s heart ached at the memory.
“Leave it, Jayce,” Viktor said, decidedly less calm.Everything falls apart. Viktor leaves before they can exile him, Jayce tries to stop him.
