"Romantic troubles. There is nothing romantic about what happened with Zuko. His silence told her exactly what she suspected: He pitied her. He saw her struggle while stretching, he noticed how out of shape he was, he heard he say nobody would ever want her. He wanted to make her feel better, he kissed her in an attempt to comfort her, but he would never like her. Mai was not a fool, she understood there were expectations for Zuko, expectations she could never fulfill. Mai’s belief that things could be different, that he possibly could like her, was a foolish idea she was humiliated to even entertain."
