Summary
Jaro reaches a hand up to stroke Cal’s cheek—his blistered, scorched cheek. The burn is angry, red and black and painful-looking, extending from Cal’s jawbone to the base of his neck. There are tears in Cal’s eyes, and Jaro wants so badly to wipe them away but he needs Cal to listen. He needs to hold the line. The Council will convene (Jaro does not believe that all of them could be gone, there must be someone left, there has to be), and they will call, and Cal will be safe.

Cal cracks his knuckles and scans the cliff face, searching for a handhold. He digs his fingertips into the narrow crack and pulls himself up, then reaches with his other hand to find another as he kicks at the rock. Dig, kick, repeat. Cal falls into an almost soothing rhythm, relishing the burn in his arms and legs as he climbs higher and higher.
