Not once in his life had Whitestorm ever truly dreamed of holding power. His father had fought bitterly to prove himself worthy of the deputy position, even attempting to show his strength by lining their borders in blood. His aunt had desperately tried to present herself as a better option, even accepting the position during one of the most difficult times in her life. His own best friend had ranted endlessly about his plans to become leader, from kithood to the day he received his warrior name. Only today did he realize those plans had been so much more than a lonely kitten’s dreams.
Why, why did it have to be anything more than that? Why did he have to go as far as he did? And why, even after standing against him in his trial, did Whitestorm find it all so unbelievable?
Because some tiny, infantile piece of his heart would always belong to that little, tear-stained kit, smiling up at him and telling him he was his family.
