Phil Coulson is a Paper Pusher by cakeisnotpie

Summary
Phil Coulson was a world class paper pusher, a born bureaucrat, a pain in the ass, and about a half a dozen other ways to say he was damn good at the job of keeping order, at least according to a lot of the people who worked with him. Handling weird shit, calmly and with aplomb, that was Phil’s job.
Phil was the glue that held Clint Barton together, the reason he’d stayed at SHEILD, the first thing Clint thought about when going on a mission, and the last thing Clint dreamed about before he went to sleep. And Clint was the reason Phil knew that they needed his death to spur them on to greatness; Clint was driven by past wrongs, haunted by the dead, and Phil had learned that from every single time Clint pulled back that bowstring and never missed.

Summary
Clint Barton had very little that he cared about in the world. He’d learned early on that if you cared, you got hurt. Parents backhanded you, mentors turned on you, and even brothers left you for dead. In the army, he’d learned to keep his mouth shut and his true abilities hidden. He’d worked on both sides of the law, killed for money, and came to SHIELD with more baggage than anyone knew. And with each new obstacle, he carefully built a wall between his heart and the rest of the world, a way to protect himself from the pain.
This is the follow up to Phil Coulson is a Paper Pusher.

Summary
It wasn’t that Tony was a voyeur or anything. Honestly. Everyone always assumed that he searched the security tapes for racy sections to jack off to in his lab, but that was so far from the truth that he let the rumor ride to cover the real reasons. Those who thought it was about trust were closer to the mark; life had taught him that most people were out for their own interests and he needed to be on constant.

Summary
The years of working at SHIELD with Phil Coulson were when Clint learned more about why he was willing to throw himself right in front of a bullet. It all came down to the fact that Clint believed he could save people. He knew, deep down, that he could make the shot, save the hostage, retrieve the captured agent. He was good, he understood that, and, with Phil’s calming voice in his ear, giving him the support he’d never had, Clint could do whatever he set his mind to, even things that seemed impossible.

Summary
So it came as a big surprise to the other Avengers when Phil and Clint stopped talking to each other, Clint moving back into his empty single room with nothing but the clothes on his back and a new toothbrush he’d left in the bathroom drawer. Oh, it was all so civilized – Phil never so much as blinked at Clint during briefings or missed a movie night – they just sat on opposite sides of the couch and steadfastly ignored each other; Phil was, of course, much more successful at being his normal self despite the sudden loss of half his identity. Clint was more of a pouter, slinking into this corner and pretending Phil wasn’t there...

Summary
Working for SHIELD means long hours of boredom occasionally mixed with short bursts of action. Everyone learned how to deal with the down time. For Clint, that involves music, being a smartass and dreaming about one Phil Coulson.
This story takes place prior to the events in The Avengers.

Summary
In some ways, Phil had it the worst; he was the ultimate voyeur most of the time as the others engaged the villains. The distance did nothing to lessen the impact; watching a child die at the hands of a criminal or an innocent civilian go down beneath falling concrete was never easy, no matter where he was. Late at night, he’d play it all back in his mind, thinking of what they could have done differently, and, if he was feeling brutally honest, indulge in a sense of frustration over his sideline status; as much as everyone else, Phil wanted to be running into danger, not waiting it out, fingers itching to pull a trigger or curl into a fist. No, Phil spent far too much time mouthing silent promises to whatever deity might be listening, hoping to never hear the call that anyone was hurt or missing or down … especially Clint.

Summary
there was no way to truly keep from forming attachments, no way to be assured that when a colleague went down beneath a hail of bullets the pain would be any less because you never acted on the attraction. Phil had realized that when he’d had to make that call to Natasha and tell her, in his calmest voice, that Clint had been compromised by that bastard Loki, and when he woke up in that hospital bed, unsure whether Clint had survived or was even Clint anymore.
So the call, when it came, surprised them all

Summary
But the one thing that got to Phil the most wasn’t singing or slapping or meditating … it was a tiny tube of black eyeliner that Clint had R & D whip up for him. Once a month a new bottle appeared and Clint would rotate the half-empty one out of his kit and tuck the full one in. According to Clint, the eye black reduced glare and sharpened his focus, much like a military sniper or a football player would use.

Summary
Clint felt completely out-of-place in the primary colored room with Disney posters and Nick Jr on the televisions. This world was alien, unknown; give him a back alley in New Orleans, a slum in Calcutta, or even one of Tony’s high society galas and Clint could blend in, do his job, and get out. But this? Kids and vaccinations and alphabet songs and pre-school waiting lists? So not his thing.
