Summary
What if instead of “I laugh in the face of death”, Puss’ signature phrase was slightly different?
-
Death had just appeared where he felt a life was soon to be lost, quickly spotting an orange cat he’d seen once before, now surrounded by angry dogs at a card table. He rolled his eyes like he usually did when cats were involved, and was about to head on out, as he knew there were another seven lives to go before he was actually needed, but the next words stopped him dead in his tracks.
“I do not fear death.” The cat proclaimed with a confident smirk.
Death felt his heart beat for the first time.

Summary
Death pops up before Puss one day and informs him that he is going to die soon unless the reaper himself intervenes. Which he is willing to do, for a price. Just a simple favor, he says.
This was how Puss found himself telling the physical manifestation of Karma (along with a slew of other anthropomorphised concepts he didn’t even know had corporeal forms) that he, The Puss in Boots, was indeed courting Death.

Summary
Puss plopped down into the gnarled roots of a half-felled tree as he desperately tried to calm his racing heart and catch his breath, straining his ears for any sound heralding the presence of none other than the reaper of souls.
He might have that saving grace of an item that made it so Death couldn’t sense where he was with his reaper magic, but it was only a matter of time before the wolf would track him down with his keen senses and many years of practice hunting prey.
In other words, Puss’ time was running out.

Summary
Puss was horrified to discover Death had found the most effective way yet to force him to drink the damn stuff, and his eyes widened when he saw the nursing bottle coming back down. He tried to back away, but there was nowhere to go, pressed into the reaper’s lap as he already was. He tried to turn his head to avoid the inevitable, but couldn’t move it more than a fraction.
He tried begging as a last resort, but his unintelligible whines went ignored as the nipple of the bottle was lowered back down, and the milk began to flow once again.

Summary
Puss lapped at his drink, then set it down on the bar top when he felt a familiar presence. “You aren’t here to try to kill me again, are you?” He casualed, not bothering to turn to face the deadly threat he knew to be right beside him.
“Oh please, that is so last week.” Death replied in his low timber. “No, I’m here to offer you a proposal.” He informed lightly.
“… I’m listening.” Puss said, intrigued (as what could the mighty reaper possibly want from a mortal such as himself?), then turned around on his barstool to face the wolf.
Death leveled him with a serious expression and said. “I need you to pretend to be my pet cat for a day.”
This was because his sister kept ‘getting on his case about being a loner’, and saying that his lack of company would ‘cause him to wither and decay’ so, fed up, he told her he had recently gotten a pet cat, but then she went and invited herself over.

Summary
During a heated game of Truth or Dare with Perrito, Puss gets challenged to hang out with Death (aka his tormentor of a week prior) for a day. Not wanting to go through with that, but not wanting to back down either, he agrees, with the stipulation that the dog get the reaper to show up, thinking that to be impossible.
He thought wrong.

Summary
Not long after the quest for the wishing star, Death keeps approaching and hitting on an uninterested Puss, until the irritated tabby finally asks what he has to do to get the wolf to leave him alone for good. Death says to let him take Puss on a date; just one, and if Puss genuinely doesn’t like it then he’ll back off and leave him be.
Fortunately for Puss, everything that can go wrong, does go wrong on said date.
Unfortunately for Puss, he kind of… liked it.
