Summary
This time, Scar's smile visibly twists, turns into something bitter that Grian hasn't seen in his face before.
"It's okay, Grian," he says. "I'm comfortable here, you don't need to do this." Grian blinks, confused.
"I—do what?" Scar raises an eyebrow at him and tucks a strand of hair behind his pointed ear.
"You're being nice," Scar says, discarding a blue fabric. Grian privately agrees, it's gaudy. "And it's sweet, really, but I'm okay."
"Scar, that's not—" Grian shakes his head. "That's ridiculous! I'm not just being nice!"
Scar looks up at him from where he's folded on the floor, grasping at velvet, and he suddenly looks very small and very tired.
"Sure," he says, and the tone makes Grian bristle, despite himself.
"Scar," he says, trying to keep calm. "Why would I do that? When have I ever been nice to anyone just for the sake of it? You're my friend—scratch that, you're our friend!" Scar huffs a little laugh and Grian watches him, helpless. "I—where is this coming from, man?"
(Or, Grian and Scar deal with some of the fallout from Last Life.)

Summary
“So, can I finally know the reason for this impromptu marathon?”
There’s nervous anticipation buzzing inside him now, and Grian has to swallow before he speaks, mouth dry all of a sudden.
“Feed on me,” he says, and everything gets very quiet. His throat clicks as he opens his mouth again, but he finds he has nothing else to say, so he just sits back, arms braced on the bed, and looks at Scar.
Scar blinks at him.
“Sorry?” Scar sounds so baffled that Grian can’t help laughing. “Grian, you’re not—”
“Now I know you’re not about to tell me what I can and can’t do, Mr. Goodtimes,” Grian says. “And if you’re about to rattle off some bullshit about me getting hurt, we both know I can beat you in a fair fight, don’t we?”
Scar’s eyes glint in the dark.
“Come on,” Grian coaxes. His wings spread out behind him without his saying, and he can feel himself flush, embarrassed. Not that Scar seems to notice the blatant presentation, but still. “I wanna help you out. You’ll have a more clear mind, and then we can find a solution together, hm?”
Scar hesitates, arms crossed, but his resolve is clearly thinning. Grian smiles, wicked.
“You always get your way, don’t you,” Scar mutters.

Summary
“Look, you don’t want to be soulmates with me, fine, but I need you to at least acknowledge it, and promise me you won’t get us both killed by jumping off some cliff—”
“I’m sorry, what?” Scar is still looking at him with that confused face, and Grian clenches his teeth.
“Look, Scar, I’m not stupid,” he grits out, stomping closer to him until they’re almost nose-to-nose. He can feel his wings flaring out behind his back. “If you don’t want me then—then fine, that’s your choice, but I’m not letting you just—avoid the truth! And act like you don’t even know, right at my face!” Grian closes his mouth with a click, breathless. His hands are sweaty and there’s an ache in his chest, hollowing out the space behind his ribs. Scar is still looking at him with those impossibly green eyes.

Summary
It's a cold, empty cave. Scar is sitting next to a stalagmite, leaning on it, his back to Grian. He's hunched in on himself, carefully placing torches around.
"Scar," Grian says, and his voice echoes through the dark. Scar doesn't twitch.
"Hello, Grian," he says, not moving to look at him. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"What are you doing here?" Grian asks. The silence is loud here, reverberating across the room. "Did you burn down my base, Scar."
This time, Scar does turn to look at him, barely a shift of the head that lets Grian see half of his face. There's something dangerous in his eyes.
"You didn't need it anymore," Scar says, and Grian stammers.
"I—what do you mean, I didn't need it? It's my base! It's our base, even! What's gotten into you, Scar?"
Scar scoffs. Grian hasn't heard a sound like that come from him in ages.
"Sure," Scar says, mocking. "Our base." He turns back around. "Just leave me alone, Grian, and go play house with your new little soulmate."

Summary
Grian wakes up.
Birds are chirping. Jimmy’s face blinks at him from above, haloed by the sun like an angel.
“Are you okay, man?” He asks, offering Grian a hand to pull him up. Grian goes, disoriented. “You were just lying there, passed out.”
“I—yeah,” he says, and clears his throat. “Yeah. What’s—where are we? It’s over, right?” Jimmy gives him a curious glance, cocking his head and laughing nervously.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” Grian stares blankly in his direction. “Um. We’re—you took us here, remember? We’re going to play this game thingy and see who wins?” Grian’s breath catches in his throat.
“That’s not funny, Timmy,” he says, jaw clenched, and Jimmy gives him a wide-eyed look.
“It wasn’t meant to be funny?” He frowns as Grian starts frantically looking around. “Are you—”
“I’m fine,” Grian snaps, barely hearing himself. His head is spinning, and his eyes must be betraying him, it must be all a bad joke—but no. There, in the distance, stands Monopoly Mountain, tall and proud. There’s nothing built on top of it. Grian stares at it, feeling like a ghost. “It can’t be,” he mumbles to himself. “I won. I won. Why did you bring me here again?”

Summary
There, in the early morning sun, stands Scar—still shirtless, his back to Grian. His wings have dried out during the night, and Grian was right, those feathers need preening—but they're still stunning. Scar’s wings are massive, his wingspan stretching out what looks like almost twice his length.
At first Grian thinks they're yellow, like a canary. There's a joke at the tip of his tongue. Then he steps closer and they shimmer golden underneath the light. Grian stares at them, fascinated.
“Damn,” he breathes out, and Scar startles and spins around. His wings get in the way and he stumbles, almost falling to the ground if it wasn’t for Grian holding him up.
“Oops,” Scar laughs sheepishly. “Hi, Grian.”
“Hi, Scar,” Grian smiles, exasperated but fond. “How are you feeling?”
“Better,” Scar says, and his wings slowly flex. “I, uh. Might have wrecked our home a bit. Thrown some furniture around. Accidentally. These are so unwieldy, I don’t know how you don’t walk around constantly knocking things over.”
“You mostly get used to it,” Grian says, amused.

Summary
Counterweight is a gray stain in the cosmos.
Grian floats suspended just outside its artificial gravitational pull, the mesh of cogs and bolts that grow out of his spine and make up Vision’s wings spread wide behind him. The entirety of the Golden Branch rests at his fingertips as its sensors feed into the back of his mind, a slow trickle of information that Grian has learned to sift through seamlessly.
Today, he's searching for something specific. Everything else reduces to a buzzing on the back of his head as he looks, selfhood divided between a thousand pinpoints across the stars, a multitude of eyes opening at the same time.

Summary
The first time Scar meets Grian, he’s being cornered against the back of a perfume shop in the Sunflower District.
The stranger is wearing a red vest over white sleeves and a black skirt, and he looks small and nonthreatening. There’s a scarf wrapped around the lower portion of his face. Scar looks at the devils writhing on the ground and takes a step back, still clutching the flowers in his hand.
“None of that,” the man says. "It was hard enough to track you down. I don’t think you want to end up like this lot, do you?”
"No," Scar says, slowly. "I can't say I do."
"Good. Now, I need the relic you stole from these guys."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Scar says cheerfully, and the man raises an eyebrow.
"Do you, now. Because they seemed pretty convinced." He takes another step forward. "And so am I."
Scar considers his options. He doesn’t fancy getting his insides pulled out through his mouth, and he needs to get out of here as fast as possible—he knows from personal experience that Blick has a nose for trouble.
"Okay," he shrugs, and flicks open his pocket. He flips the glass bottle towards the man, who stumbles trying to catch it. Scar smirks.

Summary
“Here, I’m just going to—”
Something shines silver in Scar’s hand, and in less than a second Grian has him pinned against the wall. The scalpel clatters to the ground as Scar opens his hands and stares at him, wide-eyed. Grian chokes on a yell as he pulls back his right hand where it’s holding Scar’s wrist.
“Jesus, Grian,” Scar says. “I was going to cut off your sweater. I don’t think you can get your arm out of that.”
“Right.” Grian stumbles back, head swimming. “Right. That makes—that makes sense.”
“Sorry.” Scar bends down to pick it up, slowly. He telegraphs all his movements as he straightens up. “I should have warned you.”
Heat pricks at Grian’s cheeks.
“I don’t need you to be wearing kid gloves around me,” he snaps, and drags himself back into the bed. Scar is quiet and then approaches with loud steps.
“It’ll just be a moment,” he says, and true to his word, it is. The scalpel doesn’t even glance Grian’s skin, and he’s still terrified the whole time.
