Summary
He just couldn’t tear his eyes away. He knew he should, but… Gods.
Arthur let his eyes slowly trail over the body waist deep in the cold lake, from where he stood by the trees. Moonlight shed through, lighting the sorcerer so perfectly. He was positively glowing…
“I know you’re there, Arthur…” The King nearly leapt out of his skin when Merlin’s voice drifted to him.
“It’s hot, tonight. Come join me…”
Or
Arthur’s dragged Merlin out on a hunting trip to get away from the stress of repealing the magic ban, creating new legislation to regulate usage, and drawing up the paperwork to promote his servant to Court Sorcerer.
As the night sets in, the air grows hotter rather than cooler, and after making camp Merlin wanders off with complaints of the heat.
When he doesn’t come back for a worryingly amount of time, Arthur trails off after him, unwittingly stumbling upon his manservant taking a midnight dip in a lake.

Summary
The colour of the rich, Pendragon cloak blooms in the warm light of spring. The sharp thorn of love threatens to draw blood, then. As days grow longer, hearts grow fonder. With flushed faces, abandoned stations and duties— affection taints the air thick as the very oxygen breathed. Touches become electric, and glances grow heated.
Like the first rose of midspring, love blossoms in the hearts of two men closer than any.
Or
“Arthur?” Merlin murmured late one night, as he prepped the bed for the King to retire. Moonlight poured through the window, and the warlock almost glowed as he was bathed in it.
The soft, tender way the name fell from his lips send a shiver down the King’s body, causing an outbreak of gooseflesh atop his skin. “Merlin?”
“It’s time for you to rest, Sire… You’ve worked hard enough today.”

Summary
He noticed his hands lingered a moment too long on the King’s bare skin, and yanked them away as if he’d been burned.
Stop, he told himself, stop touching what you can’t have.
He caught his eyes drifting to the King’s face in the patrol, and snapped his gaze to the ground.
Stop, he told himself, stop looking at what you can’t have.
He caught his ears straining to hear the King’s laugh amongst the rest, and hurriedly slipped away from the group.
Stop, he told himself, stop listening to what you can’t have!
He caught himself breathing in the scent of his King’s shirt, and dropped the garment like it shocked him.
Stop! He told himself, stop, stop, stop!
He didn’t catch himself in time, this time, when the faintest bit of sweet berry juice dripped from a pale mouth, and he pressed his lips sweetly against his King’s, tasting the strawberry that lingered.
“Don’t stop,” Arthur teased, wide eyed and clearly shocked, when they parted and he came back to his senses, “we were just getting started…”

Summary
“You see that there?” Arthur murmured, pointing up to the sky, “those stars there make up Auriga…”
Merlin turned his head to Arthur, momentarily shocked by his knowledge, before looking to where he was pointing. “How do you know?”
“Well… It’s got that really bright star right there at the top, then it’s got those other four points making the shape of a long box with a kind of point at the top… then there is that cluster of three very small stars beneath the brightest…” Arthur explained.
Merlin blinked a few times, his gaze turning away from the constellation and back to Arthur, a soft look on his face.
“Incredible…”Or
Merlin discovers Arthur’s knowledge of the stars, and in doing so discovers he is, indeed, able to fall even more in love with his King.
Meanwhile, Arthur discovers Merlin’s love of the stars and commits himself to learning as much about them as possible.

Summary
A new library opened up that held a section on Arthurian Legend that held some of the most accurate books Merlin had found (even if they did still get his & Arthur’s and Gwen & Lancelot’s story wrong).
He goes every day and reads the books from open to close, to keep himself close to his past. He doesn’t talk to anyone but a select few, he actively goes out of his way to ignore people unless it was absolutely necessary he didn’t, and he turned down every single offer of company or request for a date.
The people there have rumours about him, he knows. They call him obsessed, weird, cold, stone-hearted, empty, lonely, pathetic, anything you could think of. He knows.
He still goes, though. Everyday, alone. Until one day, he finds out he’s been followed…
The rumours change, after that day.

“Merlin,” Arthur gasped softly, shivering at the cold air coming through his window, “You shouldn’t be here… it’s not safe—last time you were almost ca—”
“Shhh,” Merlin hushed him as he walked over to the bed. He climbed onto it and sat beside Arthur, reaching up and cupping his face.
“I missed you…” He whispered, a soft, adoring look in his eyes that made Arthur melt.
“I… Missed you too…"
OR

“So, like, you’re sure you’re not a vampire?”
“Fairly certain, yes.”
“Fairly but not totally?”
“Merlin… Would you just tell me what this is about?” Arthur sighed loudly, finally putting his book down to look at his boyfriend.
Merlin hesitated a moment before holding out a bottle of red liquid to Arthur.
“I found this in your room. If you’re not a vampire, why do you have a literal bottle of blood in your room?”
Arthur goes silent for a moment. Then, taking a deep breath, he counters,
“And when are we going to talk about how you’re literally an immortal sorcerer, then?”
OR
Arthur and Merlin are…strange.
They’ve got their quirks, like everyone else, sure! Sometimes, though, sometimes it becomes a little too much to ignore…

Summary
“How do you know so much?” The young girl inquired, looking up to the brunet with wide eyes, an awestruck look on her face, “you talk like you were there…”
The mysterious man just grinned—a bright, illuminating grin, yet his eyes spoke volumes of sadness and heartbreak.
“Don’t you worry about that, now, lie back down, I’ve more to tell.”
Or
Fifteen hundred years after Camlann, Merlin still waited the return of his beloved.
Lonely, and his house feeling empty, he drew up paperwork, took the proper tests and did the proper registration, and began fostering children while they waited for someone to adopt them.
Sometimes, on late nights, when nightmares plague both him and his child at the time, he sits by them and tells stories of Camelot and his King. Tells the stories never written, and corrects the mistakes of historians all over.
Until one night, mid-storytime with the child he finally adopted, a nine year old girl, there’s a frantic knock at the door…

Summary
Kilgharrah’s time has come. No matter how old he is, Merlin will always believe it’s too soon. They had so much to discuss, to do, dragons to bring back, Aithusa to raise…
He knew Kilgharrah had led him wrong multiple times, driven by his own desires, bit that did not mean he cared any less for the dragon, and to watch him die…
Merlin never thought he’d live to see the day.
OR
Merlin had been quiet recently. Sad.
Arthur was growing increasingly worried about him, though he wouldn’t admit it aloud. He made no sarcastic jokes, no fond insults, he was polite and subservient, and he didn’t drop a single plate of food in three days!
If only he could get the damn warlock to speak to him.

Summary
Arthur stared shamelessly as Merlin climbed up the wooden ladder to reach the roof of his mother’s house, and did…whatever he was doing up there. It wasn’t like anyone was around to see, anyhow. He didn’t know how long he’d spent standing there, ogling his manservant, before that voice he dreamt so often of reached his ears.
“Arthur??”
“Huh? What?” The prince blinked a few times, snapping out of his daze. He heard Merlin chuckle from his high placement.
“I said, does it look too bulky from down there?” The sorcerer repeated himself.
Arthur really had no idea what he was supposed to be looking at, as he’d been rather distracted and knew nothing about roof mending. Yet, he still shook his head. “No, it looks fine!”
OR
Merlin takes a summer trip to Ealdor to visit his mother! Arthur tags along.
Many things happen on this trip—Arthur finds out farming is actually hard, Hunith enjoys mothering the Prince, Arthur pines helplessly for Merlin, Merlin becomes a health hazard for Arthur (the man swears his heart is going to give out if he sees Merlin shirtless in a garden, weeding again), and Hunith genuinely thinks they’ve already gotten together.

From behind the trees blue eyes watched in silent awe. He was…
Arthur held his breath, worried even the slightest, softest exhale would reveal his hiding spot to the mesmerizing nymph.
The Prince leaned forward a little more for a closer look as the nymph, who carefully tucked a few strands of hair behind a pointed ear.Slowly, he laid down on the grass, apparently having finished his ritual, and Arthur found himself subconsciously leaning further and further forward until suddenly…
Arthur yelped as he fell forward, into the clearing.
The dark-haired nymph shot up, wide eyed as his gaze snapped to the Prince. Arthur let out an awkward chuckle, staring back at the Nymph.
“Aha… Hello.”
OR

Arthur rolled onto his side to face Merlin with a grin.
“Well now I have to know!” He insisted.

Summary
“Merlin!” His shoulders jumped slightly as he was yanked out of his train of thought by a second call of his name. His eyes moved to look at Arthur to his right, and he tilted his head.
“What, Arthur?” He sighed. The King was frowning in bemusement as he stared at Merlin’s arm—the side of his shoulder specifically.
“Why’ve you got flowers on your shirt?”
Merlin faltered, a light heat rising to his cheeks as he realized what Arthur was referring to. He hadn’t realized he’d grabbed that shirt! He had been so tired…
“I, ah,” he cleared his throat before looking away, trying to appear nonchalant. “I like flowers.”

Merlin has a secret habit.
Or, more accurately, a coping mechanism.
Embroidery.
Whenever he feels anxious, doubtful, insecure, homesick, angry, even happy or excited, lovestruck… He grabs the needle and thread, and carefully—meticulously—sews his emotions into his clothes. Clothes, of course, that he never wears! His secret would not be so secret, after all!
Until one day, tired and rushing, he grabs a shirt without looking, and Arthur sees them.
The daisies on his arm.

Summary
"Can I go yet?"
"You know what I'm going to say, Arthur," Freya sighed as she approached the king, having just arrived back from checking up at Lake Avalon's surface.
"Had to try... They can't keep me here forever," Arthur muttered, turning his gaze back to the water. Most of his bitterness had faded after so long stuck on the damned island [which was really quite lovely, just not where he wanted to be], but a fair amount still lingered [as it should]. "I'll find a way out, back to him, no matter what they want. No matter what they try to keep me here."
"I know you will."
Or
Afterlife in Avalon is quite nice, really, once you get past the fact that you're dead for the foreseeable future and your husband is stuck waiting an eternity for you to be released [or break free, because really, that's what it's seeming like he'll have to do at this point].
Unfortunately, Arthur's never really been able to get past that fact.
Fortunately, Arthur's stubborn as a mule and determined to find a way home.
To Merlin.

The way that...
The way that Arthur was always drawn back into the sorcerer, the way he couldn't seem to pull away now. It was like the tugging force of gravity, luring him closer and closer...
"Arthur?" Merlin murmured, as Arthur pushed him back onto the soft mattress once they got close enough to the bed, his heart still pounding in his chest as he straddled him.
The King leaned down and pressed their foreheads together gently. "You've... You've got blueberry on your lips,"

"I think you're the only one who really knows me," Arthur whispered into the silence of the night, snuggled closely to Merlin in the large bed. Merlin stayed quiet for a moment, before letting out a sigh and pressing himself closer into Arthur's arms as they laid on their sides facing each other.
"I don't know what it is about you that makes me want to be so open and honest," he continued, holding Merlin close. "It's almost unbelievable how you've been able to walk into my life and just... Take it over. Yet, you did, and I—"
"Arthur," Merlin groaned, his voice muffled by Arthur's chest. Arthur stopped talking, and glanced around at where Merlin had scooted down to press his face into his chest.
He hesitated. "...Yes?"
"Vows are meant to be spoken at the altar," he mumbled, audibly tired, "Not in bed the night before wedding when your betrothed is trying to sleep."
