THIS WAS A LOVE LETTER FIC BUT NOT THE ONE I EXPECTED. And now that's out of the way, firstly tysm for gifting this to me and second and most importantly! This was really good! I loved how something so sharp and bitter which Serge might say (because I do think that underneath all that "Randy" guise, he still has very cutting edges when he wants to) to Klaus in the heat of the moment (also another Serge trait lbh) has such long lasting consequences. I loved the line "This train of thought was never the beginning, but rather the bitter end." Because I really do feel that until they sit down and have a long, proper conversation about things, they're constantly going to think of each other as a proxy for Randy - or they have his shadow between them, because they've not been friends conventionally. Klaus' sacrifice was incredibly upsetting but fitting, considering how hung up they mutually think they are on Randy (which is...true, but not quite in the same way).
The letter itself was also I think precisely what summarises the Klerge dynamic, like they can accept each other for who they are and challenge each other; Klaus can be horrible to Serge, because Serge will take it in his stride and hold him accountable for it, and I think they're each other's "unsafe choices" to fall in love with precisely because how they interact can be incredibly unpredictable (flashback to that part of SoU where Klaus describes what Serge was like as a student haha), and in this fic, how Serge didn't get to read it! My heart! Petrification Round 2 let's go haha.
Thank you for writing this it was a really great read!
Glad to outdo your expectations! You’re welcome! You gave me the motivation to get this back on track so it only felt fair. I’m glad you liked it! I also thought that under that cheery personality was someone who could really speak their mind and be harsh if needed. Serge is quite spontaneous, even without the influence of Randy and I wanted that to reflect when he said what he did without thinking of wha it could cause. I’m glad you liked that line, I really thought it fit what I was going for and I’m glad you think so! Until they properly communicate how they feel, they’re never going to figure out their differences and they’re going to simply see themselves as in each other’s way. They were friends only for the sake of someone else and now they have to live with that unless they sit and talk it through. Klaus’ sacrifice was one major thing I was toying with as i worried it wouldn’t make sense. There was a flipside of this where Klaus was going to instigate the argument and Serge would die somehow but I ended up flipping the script so I’m glad you thought it worked! They’re hung up on Randy differently, Klaus can’t let go of the fact that he sat and blamed Serge when he in himself may not have done as much as he at first thought and wanting to let go and apologise but not knowing how whilst Serge feels like everything that could’ve been done has and he just wants to let go and move on and maybe try and work with Klaus on an investigation as their power together could be unstoppable. But that means not letting go until Klaus does which leads to a lot of unnecessary resentment that later explodes and is the catalyst for Klaus’ sacrifice.
I didn’t know where to put the letter in at first but managed to find a place for it! They can treat each other in ways that they know are comfortable, even though to others it may come off as cruel. But Serge and Klaus can take each other as they know that they can be unpredictable but can deal with each other (my memory is failing me lol but I know what you mean). I had to make sure he couldn’t read it, although I’m now thinking what would’ve happened if he had. Oh no. I am beginning to rethink my choices but I think it works out better this way as now Serge has to live with the fact that he will never know what Klaus wanted him to. Although, thinking it over again, if he did know it would give some sort of resolution when I’m only looking for suffering lol. I’m also not quite sure how I would’ve fit that in to make it work. But yes, Petrification Round 2! Serge is gonna be broken by the end of this istg
You’re welcome! Thank you for reading and enjoying!
