Comment on Updates to "No Fandom" Additional Tags, December 2025

  1. It really depends on the kind of internet culture you come from. Some people are very sensitive to that sort of thing, where others don't care or appreciate it. AO3 crosses a lot of different internet demographics. It also depends a little on the style. I think people would view things differently on some erotic but mostly romantic story than they would on something that's 100% text porn.

I remember at one time e621 suggested commenters treat it like it was a fine art gallery or something, which is a little absurd since I don't think I have ever been in a fine art gallery with more than 2 pictures that would qualify as vore. I've also heard some pretty lewd remarks at fine art galleries.

I'm the type that wouldn't leave comments like that, but would be perfectly agreeable to others doing so on my stories. It never occurred to me to explicitly allow people to do so. Even if it is now canonical, I don't think I will add the tag. It feels too unrelated to the story itself to use tag real estate on.

Anyway, add "dead batteries" to the list of euphemisms.

    1. I’ve long gone back and forth on whether to include such tags. I think you’ve summed up my feelings well.
Imagining “fine art gallery” style e621 comments is giving me a giggle.

    2. Some people have trouble accepting they're writing sex scenes. Yes, there's a larger story around it but characters are still having sex. They love to use the euphemism spice instead. Some people might still get defensive even if it is 100% text porn.

Now I wanna go to a fine art gallery. I'd ask if people seriously think dead artists created all those nude and semi-nude pictures and sculptures of men and women and others WITHOUT being horny but the answer is probably yes. Sigh. The porn taboo is strong.
