Tim doesn't look up to see who has come in, too far gone to even try to pull himself together for whoever has had the misfortune to stumble in on his grief. He hopes they'll just go away and tactfully never speak of it again; barring that, he hopes they at least don't ask if he's all right, when he is clearly as not all right as it's possible to be in a workplace washroom.
The person in the doorway doesn't leave, and they don't ask any inane questions. Instead, after a brief, painful pause, Jonathan Sims says,
"The tile in here is truly atrocious."
Research-era Jon stumbles in on Tim having a breakdown in the bathroom. He tries to help.

Tim and Sasha were married for almost four months before Jane Prentiss attacked the Institute. They were four pretty good months, honestly, very possibly the best of Tim’s life. He hadn’t been married before and didn’t really plan on being after, but he could for the first time see why people did this kind of thing.
“You’re kidding,” Sasha had said when he suggested it, but lazy, with no heat behind it. He wouldn’t have been surprised if she’d been weirder about it. It’s not like they were dating or anything, just hooking up, no labels. Well, okay, they were hooking up a lot, but still. She continued, “Haha April Fool’s, right? You know that was yesterday?”

Tim is sitting at his desk. Jon is still not used to the new patterning of scars that pepper the sides of his face and his neck, but it is not the scars that stop Jon dead in his tracks.
It’s the jumper Tim’s wearing.
Danny’s jumper.
Jon’s old jumper. The one Danny used to steal every time he came over until Jon finally told him he should just keep it, as it was clear Jon was never going to get to wear it again.
The one he had once let slip that he liked seeing Danny in because it was the same color as his eyes, and Danny had laughed and taken his hand and pulled him into a tight hug as he stuttered around the sentence, cheeks burning.
The one Danny had been wearing the first time they kissed, curled up on the ratty futon in Jon’s student flat.
The one he carefully hadn’t worn when they sat on a park bench, fingers loosely linked together, and decided gently, sadly, that this wasn’t going to work.

There’s some sort of glittery streamer dangling down from the top of the doorway leading into the Archives. Hot pink, with little hearts of different sizes swaying gently in the still air. They hadn’t been there when Jon came into work this morning, he’s sure he would have noticed something so offensive to the eyes. It’s garishly out of place in the properly somber decor of the Archives. Jon reaches up, grasping the bottom of a tiny vinyl heart and rubbing it distastefully between his fingers. Anyone could have put it up between Jon’s modestly too early arrival and now, but Jon would put money on the fact that it was Tim.
It would certainly explain the unusually high level of amusement in his grin when he came to deliver his report on the Wharton case. Generally, in Jon’s experience, houses spontaneously burning down don’t tend to evoke a great deal of levity.
