When one of Albedo's experiments goes wrong, Captain Kaeya loses the ability to lie. Which would be fine, had it not been for the fact that the Cavalry Captain's only true safety net was the intricate web of lies he'd weaved for himself over the years.
Inevitably, things start to unravel far faster than Kaeya would have liked, which, added onto other additional side effects, means that he is in for one hell of a week.

The friendships here are PEAK dude my godd
Albedo and Kaeya they could NEVERR make me hate you ESP PLATONICALLY I FUCKING LOVEE PLATONIC KAEBEDO.I love reading how Albedo struggles with average human etiquette or at least emotions, but you can feel his humanity in the way he speaks here. How deeply he cares, and frustrated he feels that Kaeya doesn't appreciate himself.
That raw desperation felt so genuine of him, not as in an out of character way but in a "he probably never knew he was able to act this human" way. He never knew how much he CARED until that moment, even though they weren't close before
(They are DEFINITELY closer now. I'm accepting this as my side-canon and now Albedo and Kaeya hang out near lakes together)
Rosakae friendship too!! She loves him so much :( the things she would sacrifice and the people she would kill just if it meant he felt safer :( No doubt that, in a way, Rosaria wears her mask as well but less to trick people and more so to never let them close.
The end result ends up being the same as Kaeya, just a different approach. While Kaeya hides his emotions behind charm and laid-back manner, keeping up good appearance and keeping everything brewing under wraps, Rosaria doesn't care of public's perception of her. She becomes prickly, scary, to keep people at bay. Her and Kaeya are, in a fucked up way, of the same kin. So her feeling safe around him and caring deeply for him in this fic means so much to me
Kaeya and Jean- Ugh where do I BEGIN with these two. Jean being probably the only person Kaeya had to lean on after That Night™ for a good while before he completely puts on his mask. Reading her scared expressions, her worry was so painful. I could FEEL the hurt she felt when she said "I love you" only to receive a cold, convicted "Go." From Kaeya.
That specifically moved me to tears. Jean wants him to talk to her so badly. She WANTS to believe that he'd come to her if it was important, but you can see her believing that less and less as the fic progresses. She wants the best for him :(
Honourable Venti mention because him acting as an overseeing god instead of your usual bard is so interesting to me. Clearly, he cares. But something is holding him back from truly pursuing Kaeya, and it's really fun to read.
OHHH. DILUC RAGNVINDR. Seeing his denial being SO STRONG in the early chapters hurts so damn bad. He wants to convince himself he doesn't care but NO! A primal, integral part of him is an older brother who loves Kaeya despite it all, even as he tried to snuff that part of him out.
It's attached to his very person, Diluc wouldn't be Diluc without it. The slow progression of him being annoyed, to being wary, to suspicious, to concern, to NEAR MANIC worry to the point of "absolutely no bullshiting around this" in every conversation, to the horrifying realization that HE caused his brother to be so afraid of opening up, to the even more gut wrenching horror that his brother never wanted to make it past That Night™ in the first place.
It's so terrible to read, it hurts so bad. Him manically trying to find any other reason for Kaeya admitting to be suicidal, because no way, right? Him snapping and hugging Kaeya was so painful ughh
And lastly. HAHA LASTLYY.... THE STAR HIMSELF, KAEYA. The way he self loathed in this fic was particularly stomach dropping, I can't describe it. It feels so visceral. Like you can genuinely understand how much he hates himself.
His little jabs like "you can have a panic attack when you get home", his whole "if I'm not a monster, then-" ramble. He's spent so long trying to convince himself he's the bad guy, and he HAS convinced himself of that. But now, all the lies comes crashing down, even the ones he told himself. And now that the safety net is gone, he's confronted with his motives.
Why is he lying? Why is he the monster here? And when those motives are attacked and begin to crumble, he tries to hold on to it, not for the self hating reason, but for a security reason. Because it's all he has.
What was his entire life for then? He spent so long feeling scared, unsafe, for nothing? He won't accept that. He won't. It's written so well here ughhh how desperately he wants people to stop caring, because when he starts realizing they do, he realizes how long he's been pushing them away. And that hurts, so he tries to cling on to the slightly less bitter lie. But the truth taste sweet after the bitter aftertaste, in this situation
All in all, DEFINITELY one of my favour Kaeya FICS EVER. 20/10 read again all the time
