Chains: The Powerfic Archive
Founded in 2000 and originally entitled "Boys in Chains: the slave!fic archive," the Chains archive is devoted to powerfic: stories about emotional bonds between people of different ranks or status. For example: master/slave, boss/employee, lord/liegeman, guard/prisoner, mentor/protégé, client/prostitute, officer/soldier, seme/yuke, or dominant/submissive.
Stories can be about gen relationships (such as family, friendship, romantic friendship, or smarm) or about relationships based on sexual attraction: m/m, f/f, m/f, or f/m. Transgender and genderqueer stories are welcome. Fan works, RPF, and original works are all welcome. This zine fic has no relation to the author's 2002 pro novel of the same name, except that it's part of series of fics that are an embryonic, fanfic version of her Jurisdiction pro series. That the pro series had its serial numbers filed off was revealed at Fanlore a number of years ago (or I wouldn't be posting about this), and Ms. Matthews has always been open about her past as a fanfic writer. But this is the first time I've actually read any of the stories in this particular fanfic series (which spans more than one fandom).
Some of the characters from the pro series turn up in the earlier fanfic series as original characters. There is Jennet ap Rhiannon, acting very different. There is the engineer Wheatfields, being his usual fiery self. There is First Mate/Officer Mendez, lamenting as usual. And most of all - minus his dialect but otherwise recognizably himself - there is Andrej Koscuisko, that forever angst-ridden surgeon and inquisitor. Illustrated by Susan Matthews's wife.
And in another starship, there are Chewbacca and Han Solo, and guess whose hands Han is about to fall into?
Smug satisfaction at his self-assertiveness was replaced with brutal speed by an expression of total shock and puzzlement as the little doctor he'd been laughing at, the fragile scholarly academician, took him by the shirt front and slammed him back against the bulkhead with a suddenness and efficiency that confounded Han utterly.
Rarely has my id been so thoroughly satisfied.
This story is a delightful read, not only because one can see the skeleton of what would be transformed (quite a lot) into a pro series, but also because the fic is worth reading in its own right. My interest wandered a bit toward the end, when the mood abruptly changed, but the angsty parts in the beginning and middle held Ms. Matthew's trademark blend of suspense and gallows humor. The friendship between Chewbacca and Han was especially well done.
The story is followed by an author's afterword (with no spoilers for the story) that is mostly reprinted at Fanlore. There is also a verse epilogue and a timeline, "A Calendar of the Galactic Cycle," both provided by Christine Jeffords. I'm not going to do the math of translating Galactic Standard Years into Earth years, but I can see at a glance that Andrej is younger than Obi-Wan Kenobi and older than Darth Vader.
Keep in mind, the birth dates in the calendar don't correspond with today's Star Wars canon because this fic was published before the Star Wars prequels appeared. In fact, the fic was published the same month as The Empire Strikes Back came out. I can well imagine that the wonderfully prescient Susan Matthews was tickled pink when part of her plotline showed up as an unforgettable scene in that movie.
"The Devil and Deep Space" appeared in the May 1980 fanzine Galactic Flight #3, which I was able to obtain used, fairly cheaply. You may have similar luck.
