His feelings however were mostly summed up in his head whenever he laid eyes on Charles as, big handsome strong kind caring, and then maybe a smattering of, dangerous killer ruthless criminal. But, none of those latter things were ever purported to be negative, just a simple fact of how they lived.
It wasn’t new at all to look at a man and feel like something was pulling him deep in the gut. Usually it was pretty, almost dainty men he’d catch out the corner of his eye while he was drinking in a saloon. Once or twice those looks had led into alleys and Arthur had, for the most part, never encountered any sort of violence in those encounters. Luckily. But they often felt...Off.

A few weeks before, Charles would have never asked that sort of question. Of anyone, really. Now, though… There was something about sweating everyday, about being stranded in flat country with friends he thought long gone. It had loosened his tongue, loosened the knot in his chest a bit as well.
John shook his head in response, mouth curling up at one side.
“I always use that excuse because I always mean it.” He scratched at his neck. “Except now I ain’t so sure I’ve got a wife.”
Charles expected John to look sad at that, but that half-smile, boyish and teasing, didn’t drop.

There's a good foot and a half between them so it's not exactly cramped.
Charles leaves his hand slightly reaching into John's side of the bed, resting on top of the covers.
John looks so young, sometimes, when he's just shaved and his cheeks get ruddy, either red from sunburn or embarrassment.
His hair is tucked behind his ears, making them stick out a bit, a little longer now than Charles can remember it ever being.
But other than a general added layer of weariness, he looks like the John Charles remembers, holds in his mind next to, and sometimes intertwined with, his memories of Arthur.
"For… For helpin', both now and then, bein' kind to me and… And for Arthur," John says hoarsely, "Since he can't thank you himself. I know he'd want to."
