1. What is this?
What is this?

Fandom Giftbox is a nontraditional gift exchange like Fandom Stocking (think of it almost like a mash between an exchange and a fest or prompt meme). It occurs between June and September each year.

Participants sign up with info about what forms of media, fandoms, prompts, etc, they want, as well as any DNWs. Other people will then leave treats in your giftbox, and the mods will reveal those on the reveal date. Then you get to enjoy your treats!

Where will this be hosted?
Original posts will be at Dreamwidth simply because it handles anon commenting significantly better than Livejournal, and I want the platform to work for everyone, even those without an account. There is a feed to make sure you can follow activity on LiveJournal: here.

2. Sign Ups & Fandoms

Are there nominations, or is just any fandoms I want?

Any fandom you want. We will not be vetting them when you sign up, and it doesn’t matter if they are a fandom of 1 fic or a fandom of 100,000 fics. Just keep in mind the pool of potential treaters if you sign up for a really small one – but if you don’t mind there only being one or two possible writers on the whole internet for that fandom, we don’t mind either.

What’s a DNW?

A DNW is a Do Not Want. Basically, anything that is going to ruin your exchange if you get it in a fic.

What about nonfannish gifts? Can I request things like crochet, tea, feminism, etc.?
Yes! Just use the fandom name Original, then add your prompts as usual. Original covers original fiction with particular character types, original graphics with particular themes, or any other kind of original nonfannish work.

Should I post each subfandom as its own fandom—e.g. Star Wars: Original Trilogy, Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy—or post them all as one fandom, e.g. Star Wars?

This is at requester discretion. If you'd like gifts for the overall continuity, them signing up with the umbrella fandom is perfectly acceptable. If you'd like gifts for only one subfandom, then breaking it out is probably the way to go.

Is there a maximum number of fandoms I can request?

Nope! You can have however many you want, as long as you fill out the sign up form for each fandom separately.

When do I post my fandoms?

Post your fandoms in your sign up, using the fandom form underneath the form for general info.

How should I request crossovers?
If you're adding a crossover option to a fandom, list it in the prompts section. If you're treating the crossover AS a fandom, then go ahead and list both fandoms in the fandom name field and a parenthetical (crossover) so I know to handle it differently in tagging and listing.

What do I need to do for giftbox posting?

Nothing, that’s entirely on the mods end and we’ll get it done as quickly as possible. You just get to sit back, relax, and watch the giftboxes go up.

Can I opt out of generic or "original work" gifts?
Yes, you can. Anything you list under DNW in the form will not count toward your gifts and will not be unscreened should anyone "gift" it to you.

Can I link to past exchange letters, lists of prompts, etc, on my journal?

This is fine to give anyone more prompts to fill, ideas of what you like, etc. Your DNWs do need to be included in your official requests/signups, however.

3. Finding Prompts for Gifts

Are there assignments?

No assignments! While we hope that participants will also treat other people, we will not be telling you who you need to treat. That’s up to you, and you can choose from any of the other participants’ giftboxes to do so.

Can anyone make gifts/fills, or do they have to sign up?
Anyone can make gifts and fills, as long as they meet the minimum requirements.

Will there be a way to find requests by fandom while still leaving "giftboxes" visible for everyone and open to browsing?
That's the plan! Giftbox posts will be posted according to the schedule. Over the following weekend, a requests spreadsheet sortable by fandom will go live. Over the next week, I intend to make a post (or more) of alphabetized fandoms with links to tagged giftboxes under each fandom.

4. Posting Gifts

What's the minimum size of a work?
A drabble or an icon, so 100 pixels or words. Gifts that do not meet minimum requirements will not be unscreened.

Is there a way to give a gift that is anonymous on DW but still editable?

The internet says no, and if there is a hidden way to do it, the mods haven’t found it yet. Sorry. :/

Can I post only in the Ao3 collection and not in the DW comments?

Yes. Just leave a link to your Ao3 fill in the comments, so the mods and recipient can find it.

Are gifts exclusive to the recipient?
For this year, gifts must be exclusive to the recipient. If you want to drop gifts in multiple boxes, please make each one different.

5. Gift Reveals

Does everybody get a gift? What if I only get those generic/nonfannish gifts?
Everybody. The big thing I want is for everyone to get at least one fandom item of a type they requested before marking a Giftbox filled/not needy on my little tracker. Any gifts of a media type you specifically asked not to receive will not be unscreened and will not count toward whether you have received a gift.

Any generic gifts that don’t fulfill one of your fandoms will also not be counted.

Are the mods really going to check all gifts before unscreening to see if there’s any DNWs included? That seems like a lot of work.

Fills will be glanced at for DNWs, yes. It’s entirely possible we will miss a DNW (and please tell us if we do!), but we’d rather prefer to avoid as many of those as possible.

Signups/Requests
1. Please use the provided template for sign ups.

2. Please leave your sign up form in the textarea to make my life simpler on creating your post. If you want to also provide one without the textarea, you can simply copy/paste the completed sign up after the textarea and delete out the textarea tags.

3. Please use an additional form for each fandom. This is also to make my life easier in reposting so those filling requests can easily find yours.

4. You are required to sign up with a minimum of three fandoms. This should improve the chance that your giftbox will be sufficiently filled. If you have only two fandoms you're interested, please contact the mod via the Mod Support post. If one is a megafandom, original, or an easily consumed five-minute fandom, you may be allowed to sign up with two fandoms at the mod's discretion.

5. If you are open to receiving "original" work, whether that's art or fiction, please use that as the fandom name. If you are not open to receiving original work, you can add it to your DNWs or simply not sign up with "Original" as a fandom.

6. Please indicate on your sign up which media you are willing to receive gifts in. Art is required to be at least 100x100 pixels and fiction is required to be at least 100 words.

7. If you want fanmixes or fanvids or any other medium, you can specify that in your list, but please do not make them your only request.

8. Please remember to read/view and comment on your gifts after reveals. Bookmark/track your giftbox post when it goes live if you need to. Noncommenters may not sign up next year until they have commented on their previous gifts.

9. If you receive any gifts you feel are abusive or meet a DNW or are otherwise inappropriate, please contact the mod immediately through the Mod Support post so it can be addressed. You are not obligated to comment on gifts that are abusive or against the rules.

Comments/Fills

1. To fill a giftbox, please comment on the post of the recipient. Comments will be screened until reveals.

2. Each gift must be unique to the recipient. If you wish to gift more than one recipient, please make a new gift for each one.

3. Fills are required to be at least 100x100 pixels or 100 words, in a requested fandom and medium, and avoiding all stated DNWs. Gifts that do not meet minimum requirements will not be unscreened.

4. Do not offer a fill with a stated DNW. Such comments will not be revealed or unscreened.

5. No comments that could be considered abusive or insulting to the requester. Edit 7/1/17: This rule also applies to comments left by the recipient on their gift. Flaming is not allowed, and may result in a ban from future rounds.

6. Gifters can be anonymous or signed in.

7. Fills can be added to the AO3 collection, but you are not required to do so.
