Chapter Text
Kobayashi used to sleep soundly at night. She used to sleep alone in her bed and wake up the next morning, to get ready to go to work without interruption. Everything changed about 6 months ago, when dragons moved into her house. Now, fast asleep, she felt the brushing of another being in her bed, she sighed a little. She wondered if it were Tohru or Kanna this time.
Grumpily she slowly turned, her eyes sleepily crept open, to find the small dragon child, Kanna, laying in front of her, her eyes filled with tears. Kobayashi woke up, fully alert now.
“Kanna! Whats wrong?” She asked, reaching for her glasses and putting them on. Her mind was still groggy, trying to catch up with itself.
Kanna rubbed her eyes “I had a bad dream...” She said, clinging to Kobayashi.
The older women sighed, petting Kanna. It was obvious it wasn't going to be serious and she was worried for nothing. “Its okay. You can sleep with me tonight. Would that make you feel better?”
Kanna nodded slowly, still clinging to Kobayashi. “...You won't let monsters take me right Miss Kobayashi...?”
Kobayashi took off her glasses again. She felt the question was a little silly, after all, Kanna could probably take care of any monster that attacked. Much more than Kobayashi could anyway. Still, nightmares weren't always rational and she knew a scared child when she saw one. “Of course not. Me and Tohru will keep any scary monsters from hurting you.” She said laying back down. She felt a hand from her other side reach over her, petting the smaller girl, much to Kobayashi's annoyance.
“That's right Kanna! Me and Kobayashi here will take good care of you and make sure you're protected!” Came Tohru's voice, laying down and cradling Kobayashi's other side.
Kobayashi sighed. “Tohru...why are you in here?”
“Because! Its not fair that Kanna gets to sleep with you and not me! Plus! It might make her feel better if we both are here with her, right?” She said smiling!
Kobayashi sighed. Two dragons now cradling her sides... surprisingly it wasn't unwelcome. These past several months were actually nice. And Kobayashi felt happier. She smiled more often, and enjoyed the company of Tohru and Kanna. Despite all the minor struggles, annoyances, and hurdles, Kobayashi was more then content. Content is how she used to feel. Now she felt happy. She smiled as two dragons cuddled into her, she planted a kiss on each of their foreheads.
Kanna smiled a little and clung to Kobayashi harder, slowly drifting off back to sleep. “Thanks Mom.” She said softly. Nuzzling into the human woman and slowly drifted to sleep.
Tohru blushed heavily and had a loving smile on her face. “I'm so glad I fell in love with you” She said quietly not to wake Kanna. Slowly falling asleep herself.
Kobayashi smiled, closing her eyes and softly saying. “Me too.” Slowly dozing off to sleep.
Kanna woke several hours later at the sound of Kobayashi's alarm. She didn't have a restful sleep the night before, at least during the first half. The young Dragon girl had a terrible nightmare that she was being chased by monsters, and Tohru and Kobayashi left her behind.
The nightmare terrified her deeply, but the warm petting of Kobayashi waking up was enough to make her smile again and affirm that her fears are unwarranted. She clung to Kobayashi. “Good Morning Mom” She said smiling.
Miss Kobayashi rubbed her eyes and looked down at the younger girl. “You... really don't have to call me mom..” She said, she seemed to not like it for some reason. Kanna could feel it.
“...Okay Miss Kobayashi”, the young dragon girl said, as the older woman started getting up and ready for the day. For the last several months, Kanna saw Kobayashi as a mother to her, but realized that maybe Kobayashi didn't feel the same way at times. Still she cared deeply about her and wanted to make her happy.
She started getting ready for school. Tohru was helping her get dressed and collected her supplies for school, while Kobayashi was getting ready for work. Kanna turned to Tohru and asked. “Why does Miss Kobayashi not like it when I call her mom?” She asked, tilting her head.
Tohru smiled. “Oh! I think its just that being called mom makes her feel old. If you want you can call me mom! It would mean me and Miss Kobayashi are both your parents!” She said gushing. Wiggling in place.
Kanna didn't seem to fully like that answer. “Kobayashi is young? Does she not like taking care of me?”
Tohru seemed to realize that she had to tread carefully with her words. Pausing for a moment before speaking up. “Of course Miss Kobayashi likes taking care of you!” Tohru said smiling. “She's just got all these human hangups. Give her some time! And she'll be calling you daughter in no time!” She said hugging the smaller dragon.
Kanna smiled a bit. She liked it here in this world. It was more peaceful. She had a better life here. And she felt like both Tohru and Kobayashi really did care about her. She almost forgot about her days in the other realm. And being ignored and later abandoned by her parents. The sharp pain of abandonment having dulled over time, and the warm reception of Tohru and Kobayashi has filled her aching heart with joy.
She finished getting ready. Waving goodbye to Tohru. “Thanks... Momma” She said, it feeling a little weird to the young dragon but it didn't feel off. She saw Tohru's face beaming at being called mother. It made Kanna smile more.
Kobayashi walked out of her room all dressed for work. Fixing her tie and looking down at Kanna. “You feeling better from last night?” She asked, slight concern in her voice.
Kanna nodded. “Yes. Mom Kobayashi and Momma Tohru made it all better”
Kobayashi frowned a bit, it seems she was still uncomfortable being called mom. But she didn't say anything about it. “I'm glad you're feeling alright.” She put on her jacket and her and Kanna left the house.
Kanna's school was within walking distance, but Kobayashi had to take the train, the two separating as Kanna very soon met up with her human friend, Riko Saikawa.
Riko seemed to be waiting by the crosswalk, pretending not to notice Kanna was there as she approached. She turned and acted surprised. “Oh! Kanna! I wasn't waiting for you or anything! I was just... you know. Watching the lights! But if you're here we might as well go to school together” She said blushing.
Kanna nodded. Walking with her friend. “I like walking with you.” She said simply. Riko was just another reason she enjoyed this world. She didn't have any friends other then Tohru before. And even Tohru wasn't exactly a peer to her, just the one other dragon that she knew closely.
Riko was still blushing mad, scratching the back of her head. “Y-you know. It can get a little bumpy down this sidewalk.... Do you want to... Hold hands with me and keep each other safe?” She said, very obviously making flimsy excuses. Kanna didn't have any objection with this however. She liked Riko. And gladly reached out and held her hand. Causing Riko to blush even more.
The two walked on the way to school. However, several school boys were watching the two as they walked. One of them pointing at his friends and laughing. “See! I told you they were lesbians!” He said as his friends laughed.
Riko puffed her cheeks. “Don't you three have anything better to do?” She said getting mad real quick. Kanna put a hand on her shoulder trying to calm her down.
The boys continued laughing. “It makes sense the girl with two mommies would make other girls like her”. Said another boy. This comment causing a slight change in expression in Kanna, but it wasn't enough to set her off.
“My mom said that your mom has this maid cosplay she dresses up as!”
“Isn't one of your moms a drunk?”
“Who dresses you? The mom that dresses like a maid or the drunk mom?”
“I heard the drunk mom really likes maids!”
The comments were plentiful, but for the most part they were just dumb boys trying to pester them because it was fun. She didn't care. She tried to show restraint even if they were a little annoying.
“So wait. Who's your dad?” one of the boys asked. “Do you know who your real parents are?”
Kanna was trying to leave with Riko, but this comment finally set her off. “Kobayashi and Tohru are better than my original parents.” She said, not thinking about what she was saying.
“oooh” one of the boys said. “I get it! Your real parents didn't want you! So you had to settle for the two lesb-” He didn't get to finish his sentence. Next thing he knew he was getting punched hard enough to send him flying into the school wall. The boy groaning as he held his stomach, crying as his friends rushed to him.
Kanna panted, not liking losing her temper as she turned to see one one of her teachers standing by the gate. She turned to see the boys shouting to call a nurse, the boy crying something fierce. Shouting that he thinks something might have been broken. Kanna was grabbed by the arm and pulled into the school by the teacher.
Riko stepped forward. “W-wait! The boys were-” she tried but the looming presence of the teacher filled her with too much fear to continue.
“Miss Saikawa! This doesn't concern you! Head to your class right this instant!” The teacher shout. “Unless you want your parents called as well for aiding this trouble maker”.
Riko's eyes welled up. She was about to speak but saw Kanna shake her head. “Riko...go to class. I'll be fine” She said, as she was pulled away. Riko stood there, afraid for her friend.
Kanna was forced to sit outside the disciplinary office. Nearby she saw the nurses office where the boy was being walked to by at least 2 different teachers. He looked over at Kanna and shot her a triumphant look before going back to crying about how much it hurt.
Kobayashi was hard at work in her office. Kanna's recent habit of calling her mom was what was on her mind. She enjoyed having Kanna there. She enjoyed being there for her and raising her as her guardian. But to be called Mom was a huge commitment. She had only just now realized that its very possible that these dragons would be with her for a very long time. Possibly the rest of her life.
When Tohru first came, she had assumed that she was only going to be there for a few days and possibly get bored of being a maid. She wasn't really sure why the dragon was so enamored with her... She didn't think of herself as anything particularly attractive. She wasn't very fun. She didn't have a lot of hobbies. She wasn't very funny. And yet Torhu seemed like all of those things. Beautiful, interesting, powerful and talented. It just didn't make a lot of sense to her really.
And Kanna she assumed her parents would have called her home by now. 6 months and yet they didn't contact them at all. She opened her home up once she realized that this was going to be a bit more long term then sae had planned. But even then, she started to wonder if she was going to watch Kanna grow up. Graduate high school. Maybe even college? Would Kanna get a really nice degree? It would be nice if she made something of herself but it was more important that she was happy with whatever avenue she wanted to take her life in.
She started to realize that she was far more invested in these Dragons than she had thought. She quite possibly had to face the facts. She was to be stuck with these two for long run. And nothing was going to change that.
She heard her coworker call to her. “Hey. Kobayashi! You have a call on line 4! Something about Kanna?”
Kobayashi sighed. It looks like she got herself in trouble at school again. She reached for her phone. “Hello. This is Kobayashi speaking.” She said into the phone, waiting to hear what sort of trouble Kanna got into. But rather then hearing a stern angry teacher or facility member, she heard a low growl into the phone.
“WE HAVE FOUND YOU. WE REQUEST THE RETURN OF OUR DAUGHTER”
Meanwhile, back at the house. Tohru was sighing on the phone. “I don't really get the big deal. The boy lived right?” She moved the phone away from her ear and sighed loudly. “Okay! If it means that much to you I'll come down there.”
