Work Text:
“Courtney, get those glazed donuts finished for the afternoon!”
The twenty-seven-year-old woman sighs hearing her boss’ demand, having just started to decorate the batch of donuts with pink glaze.
“Yes, boss…” Courtney answers, loud enough for her boss to hear, not taking her eyes off the pastries she decorates.
She needed a job after leaving the Red Ring, one a good distance away from anything villain-related, and one that distracts her from everything she had done. Despite being banned there, Granny offered her a job at the donut shop on the condition she’d defend the place from robbers and other villains. A fair compromise, if the ex-villain says so herself.
Making donuts and coffee drinks may not be Courtney’s dream job, but it’s nice work. It gives her structure, a routine to follow, something she didn’t know she needed in her life.
The sound of the front door opening, followed by the tiny bell above it ringing, cutting Courtney out of her thoughts.
“Courtney, there’s a customer!” Granny shouts again, as if the ex-villain hasn’t heard the bell herself already. “Get to the counter. I’m busy!”
Letting out another sigh, Courtney finishes decorating the donut she’s currently working on before heading to the counter.
“On it…” She lets her boss know on her way, not wanting to come across as uncaring and that she doesn’t care about her job.
Finally reaching the counter, Courtney sees who the client is. Instead of an old lady or an old couple, the type of clients the store usually gets, it’s a guy her age. He actually looks quite handsome, having short brown hair and matching brown eyes. His build isn’t that masculine, but he doesn’t look like a skeleton-
Courtney forces herself to snap out of it. Why the fuck is she thinking about a customer this way? He’s only there to get his donuts, that’s it.
“Welcome to Granny’s Donuts, what can I help you with?” She formally greets him, having done so with every customer except when there’s a line.
“I ordered a dozen donuts, if that’s correct?” The guy asks, glancing at the receipt that he has brought with him.
“What’s your last name?” Courtney asks him, needing to know that to check the order.
“Robertson.” The customer answers, giving her a smile.
Courtney turns to the monitor before she can blush, searching the surname in the administration with the matching order number. Yup, a box of a dozen plain glazed donuts for Robertson.
“Alright, let me get them.” Courtney lets him know with a smile, before going back to get the box in question. She always makes the orders right after they come in, especially boxes of donuts.
“Here you go.” She says as she puts the box of donuts on the counter, giving it to the customer. As he takes the box from the counter, Courtney notices the logo on his blue shirt that turns out to be a work uniform. “You work at SDN?”
“Mhm, as a dispatcher.” He answers, glancing at the logo on his shirt before looking back at her. “I, uh, have to get my team donuts after losing a bet.”
“Poor you.” Courtney playfully mutters.
“You know the company?” The customer asks now that she mentions the place.
“I’ve heard of it before.” Courtney answers, having seen some posters and billboards with that logo on them. Apparently, it’s the company that sends heroes on missions or something like that. “I considered joining it, but I figured making donuts is easier.”
“You have powers?” The customer asks out of curiosity now that she mentioned having heard of the company before.
“Invisibility.” Courtney answers without thinking, figuring this guy has experience with superheroes. And it’s not like she keeps her powers a secret. “Well, only when I hold my breath.”
“Huh, if I were your boss, I’d add being a part-time bodyguard to your contract.” He says with a smile.
“Already has.” Courtney says. Her boss may be old, but not dumb. Employing someone with powers at a normal job is bound to have something extra in their contract. “I have to make donuts and defend the shop from robbers around here.”
“You'd better get paid fairly for that.” The customer, Robert, says with a smile. “I have to go. My break is almost over.”
“See you around?” Courtney asks, definitely wanting to see him again someday.
“Mhm!” Robert just answers before turning around, intending to walk towards the exit. “Have a nice day!”
“You too!” Courtney calls out before he disappears through the door.
Something about him makes her want to see him again…
