Taught to be a Hero

Summary:

Things have begun to change for Hana as she adjusts to a new life at UA. Relationships begin to form, and friendship begins to bloom. Though despite this, issues seem to arise; from disconnection to Hawks to a sinister voice in her head, will she be able to push through?

Notes:

This is the second book in the Crystal Saga. If you have not read book 1, 'Taken Under Red Wings', I recommend you read that first. I tried to keep this story connected to the canon timeline and events, though I may have had to change up some things to make it flexible for my OC. I will also be trying to post a chapter every 1-3 days if I can.

Once again, I will not be accepting commission-based offers. Thanks!

Chapter Text

Hana Sukushi gave a slight bow to Aizawa before taking the outfit from him. Over the past week, she had started getting used to her school uniform, and now she finally had her own hero suit.

Though she lacked the license that was supposed to go with it.

Aizawa’s tired eyes widened slightly with some sense of gladness. “Let me know if the design isn’t what you asked for.”

Hana smiled slightly, taking the costume off of the office desk. Before she could turn to leave, Aizawa mentioned one last thing.

“Oh, Sukushi, in order to be fully enrolled in the hero course I’ll need to know your hero name.” Aizawa slid a form across the desk. “I’ll be handing it in to Principal Nezu.”

Hana swallowed, putting the costume in one hand and picking up the pen in the other. She hesitated, almost writing the name Shard down.

Why on earth would I choose my villain name?

She took a deep breath, then wrote down something else. Prism. It seemed softer, kinder even. She slid the form back over to Aizawa, and Aizawa nodded with approval.

“That’s a nice idea.”

Hana managed a smile, carrying the costume out of the office and heading over to the dormitory. Once she reached her now customized dorm, she sat on her bed and examined the costume. It was a dark indigo leather suit, with purple lining and a wide hood attached. There were leather black boots with light blue crystals etched into the sides. The costume had been sized perfectly to fit her, and the sight of it got her excited. Mei Hatsume had offered to give Hana some extra gear, such as thicker gloves to prevent crystals etching into her hands. She had taken up the offer, and the gloves did look pretty good.

It was a Saturday morning, and in three weeks the UA Culture Festival would be held. Class 1A was pretty much set on doing a concert, and they were already trying to form themselves into separate teams for it.

Hana left the costume on her bed, then walked over to the mirror she had put in her dorm. Her hair was down at the moment, her light blue waves down past her shoulders. She took the purple elastic off of her desk and began putting her hair in the braid that she usually had.

I’m supposed to meet up with Hawks at the cafe, she thought to herself. I wonder what his reaction will be to knowing I got my own hero costume.

There was a loud bang on her door.

Hana jumped slightly, dropping the elastic, leaving her hair still down.

“One second!”

She was just wearing her light blue sweatpants from her sweat set, as well as a purple tank top. Jeez, I look kind of homeless.

Finally, Hana swung the door open, expecting to see one of the girls.

Her eyes widened slightly.

Bakugo crossed his arms, scoffing. “You’re acting like I have two heads. Stop looking at me like that.”

Hana straightened up, loosening her shoulders to compose herself. “Sorry, I was just getting ready to head to a cafe.” She didn’t tell him the exact reason, but it was most likely pretty obvious.

Bakugo was slightly taken aback noticing her hair was down, but then he just rolled his eyes. “Tch, BirdBrains can wait. Aizawa wants me, you, and Todoroki to do some quick last-minute training before heading to the Commission.”

Hana tilted her head. “The- what? Why are we going to the Commission?”

“Hero licenses,” Bakugo stated bluntly, like that was the most obvious thing in the world. “The system was rigged, so we gotta retake it. You get to do it too.”

Receive a hero license?

Hana clenched her fists, trying to resist the crystals that wanted to peek out. “I sort of just assumed that I wasn’t ever gonna be allowed to. With my history with the League, I just thought–”

“Oh, don’t give me that crap.” Bakugo gestured inside her dorm, pointing to the hero costume on her bed. “Get that ugly costume on and meet us in the training grounds. Don’t make me drag you out myself.”

With that, Bakugo stormed off. Hana just stood there, slightly confused, trying to piece together what was going on.

The costume fitted well, and the crystal touch really added on to the layers. Hana made sure to strap the gloves and boots on well, not wanting them to come off. She then jogged down the dormitory halls, eventually making it to the stairwell and out the back exit.

Outside in the training grounds there was Bakugo, Todoroki, and Aizawa. Hana walked over to Aizawa, straightening up slightly.

“What are we gonna be working on?”

Aizawa sighed, as if he was slowly deteriorating just from being awake. “You haven’t had much combat training yet, but you’ve done well with hero knowledge and rules. Lucky for you, when the Commission stated you could come to the exam retake, they also stated that it wouldn’t involve much combat.”

Hana’s eyes lit up slightly. As much as she liked combat, she wasn’t very used to fighting as a hero.

Aizawa then took a step back to face all three of the students. “The Commission didn’t tell me exactly what to expect, just that it would involve compassion and teambuilding. You retake the exam tomorrow, so there isn’t much time.” His tired eyes scanned over the three of them. “As for what you’ll do for training…”

The three of them braced themselves.

“...I’m not sure.”

Bakugo’s face went red with anger. “YOU DON’T KNOW? Why did you bring us out here then?”

Shoto calmly blinked. “...Okay.”

Hana just rolled her eyes. “Wow, you guys are impossible.”

As if a light lit up above Aizawa’s head, he seemed like he had an idea. “Nevermind, I’ve got it.” He turned to Hana. “Have you met Eri? She’s been staying with us for a week and a half.”

Hana glanced up to him. “I haven’t met her, but some of my classmates mentioned who she was.”

Aizawa’s expression somehow got more serious. “She’s been having a rough morning. Tetsutetsu ate the rest of her favourite cereal, and she hasn’t spoken since.”

Bakugo stared at him, deadpanned. “The hell does that have to do with anything?”

“I want you three to cheer her up.” Aizawa then turned, walking away. “I’ll go bring her out.”

Hana just sighed. “Is this normal?”

Shoto shrugged. “I don’t know. This specific thing has never happened.”

Bakugo turned to him. “Well obviously, know-it-all.”
